The San Miguel Valley campaign was a Spanish Civil War wargames campaign run by the estimable Michele Armellini. Set in March 1937, this fictitious valley has been the site of a hard-fought struggle between the Republican and Nationalist forces, in fictional divisions but using historical units. The prize of the campaign was control of one of the access routes to Madrid. The end result was a Republican victory, but the Nationalists achieved some of their aims, and there was some hard fighting from both sides. As one of the players, I can vouch that the campaign was engrossing and, above all, great fun to play. The Brigade and Divisional commanders were in touch with the referee (Michele) by e-mail, while the tabletop wargames (using the Command Decision system) were fought by players from two gaming groups in Italy, who played the Battalion commanders.
