The church is named after the patron saint of St. Nicholas as the church was appropriated to the Hospital of St. Nicholas, Salisbury in 1227. St. Nicholas was Bishop of Myra in Asia Minor in the 4th century AD. The present church dates from the 12th century and major alterations or restorations were undertaken in the 16th, 19th and 20th centuries. The church is Grade 2 Star listed.
