The entrance to Syke's Wood is located at the junction of Tong Road and Roker Lane on the Leeds and Bradford boundary. Turn right, through the swing gate, on entering the wood and follow the path with the stream on your right. There is a good network of public footpaths for you to explore but beware as these can get very muddy, even in the summer months, after heavy downpours! With a variety of habitats to be found: woodland, pastures and crop fields along your walk I am sure that you will find a visit to Syke's Wood very enjoyable. All the common migrant birds: Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler, Blackcap, Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat and Spotted Flycatcher can be found here along with all three species of woodpecker; Great Spotted, Lesser Spotted and Green. Tawny Owl, Little Owl, Nuthatch and many of our commoner species of Tits and Thrushes can also be seen. Spring and Autumn migration: Redstart - Whinchat - Wheatear - *Pied Flycatcher - *Wood Warbler. Winter Siskin - Brambling - Fieldfare - Redwing - *Woodcock. *Occasional sightings. Rarest Bird - Great Grey Shrike in the mid 80's.
