Information

I have traced my Troughton ancestors back through the male lineage.
They lived in the former county of Westmorland, England. The earliest record I have found is the birth record of Thomas Troughton born 1680 in Kendal.

Naming Patterns.

The family sometimes gave their children their mother's maiden name as a second given name. This naming pattern continued for serveral generations' although they continued to use the same name, The names BARROW and ROBINSON, were used rather than the surname of the childs mother, for example some grandsons and great-grandsons of William Barrow Troughton were also names William Barrow Troughton.
[These people do not feature in my direct family tree as they are my uncles].

Thomas Troughton (b.1680) in Kendal, (my 6th great grandfather), married Dorothy Workman in 1706, Dorothy was born in Bradleyfield in (1681), the couple lived in Bradley field, about 1710 Thomas, Dorothy and family moved to Underbarrow for a few years then moved back to Bradleyfield. (Underbarrow and Bradleyfield form a township about three miles square, Bradleyfield consists of a few scattered houses the township of Underbarrow and Bradleyfield are 2 to3 miles from the market town of Kendal).

John Troughton (b. 1709),in Bradleyfield (my 5th great grandfather), first married abt 1728 - Mary surname as yet unknown., they lived in Bradleyfield after their marriage later moving to Underbarrow
John (b.1709) married again aged 80 his bride was Margaret Barrow from Kendal a 54 year old spinster, the couple were married in Underbarrow, on the marriage record it gives John’s occupation as a weaver (presumably retired).

John Troughton ( b.1734), in Underbarrow (my 4th great-grandfather) married Mary Barrow in 1757 John and Mary lived in Bradleyfield where all of their fourteen children were born.

William Barrow Troughton ( b.1769)in Bradleyfield (my 3rd great-grandfather), married in 1795 Ann Robinson (b.1772), in Kendal, William and Ann married in Underbarrow, where the first two of their children were born.
William and Ann then moved to Crook (about a mile from Underbarrow) in 1800, where they had ten more children. (Twelve children altogether)
I was very fortunate to find a baptism record for William and Ann’s first two children, (they were baptised on the same day) which name’s grandparents and great grand parents, their occupations and their addresses are also on the baptism record. Which was a tremendous help to my research. Link to baptism record Download time 43 seconds.

Septimus Robinson Troughton (b.1806), in Crook, (my 2nd great-grandfather)
married in 1828 Ellen Hoggart (b. 1809 in Hutton Roof), they married in Hutton Roof, all of their fifteen children were born in there, on some documents Septimus’s occupation is given as a stone- cutter, he must have had a change of occupation at some point because on later documents it gives his occupation as a farmer.
Septimus Robinson Troughton died 11th June 1853 aged 47, in Hutton Roof after an illness of two years duration. His death certificate gave the cause of death as consumption.
