Welcome to E22's private room

We have discovered that E22 is actually test transmissions from All India Radio, the engineers use the codes to identify different settings and locations!

Here is the All India Radio Web site, transmissions to Europe are usualy very high power and quality.

http://allindiaradio.org/

With so much work and interest in the elusive E22 we have decided to give it a page and style of its own.

Currently all sound clips are in date order as taken from the numbers page 2.

The first time we found E22 we did not know its identity and so it was recorded under its call!

PN8. Recorded 09/07/2005 I noted a large S9 AM carrier up at 12:55 when I switched on my radio. Running up to the hour a high pinched tone came up. Then at 13:00 a male announcer calls "This is Papa November 8" he then calls
PN8 several more times.

Note this seems to be a live transmission.

At 73.60 in the recording you hear me say "next transmission and listen for background sounds" The next transmission came up at 13:05 and followed the same call. Listen at 128.3 in the recording just after the fourth time the announcer speaks, you can hear a female voice in the back ground. The signal was full AM and was S+9 most of the time. This is a large file!

XN2 Recorded 09/07/2005 at 14:00 on 15040, recording starts with carrier sounds followed by high pitched tone. From 0 to 20.71 you hear the carrier, there seems to be some voices in the background at this point! The tone starts at 13:59 (cut short for recording) then the announcer comes up and says "This is X'ray November 2" he then repeats the call XN2 four times.
Now at 97.49 in the recording we move to the next TX. The next TX starts at 14:04 with the tone followed by the announcer again at 14:05.

E22 16/07/2005 12:00 17385. E22 had been on already today but I caught it calling Papa Sierra five, pronounced 'seera' carrier up 11:55, tone up 11:58 50s voice 12:00 This recording is of just the first call up there being one identical at 12:06. Listen at the start of this recording for the interesting data bursts! Note that 17385 and 15040 kHz run parallel with each other for E22.

E22 again! 16/07/2005 at 13:00 on 15040 this time. The recording lets you hear both the 13:00 and 13:06 call up, the announcer calls Cubic Tango three, actually 'Quebec' but his accent makes it hard to hear, so we now have QT3.
Listen particularly during the second call up at 13:06, you hear many background noises and even the announcer swallowing!

E22 yet again!! 16/07/2005 at 14:00 on 17385, calling Mike November Two, again many background noises, the best of which seems to be a phone ringing just after the announcer says "This is MN2" the first time!

E22 background noises from the end of the MN2 transmission, you can hear voices
and a womans voice comes up very clear for a word or two.

E22 recorded 22/07/2005 from 13:59 on 15040 KHz. At the start you hear a male voice speaking very quickly, then the usual tone starts up but only very briefly before the announcer starts calling Zulu Yankee Eight ZY8. I have clipped this part! we then move on to the 14:06 TX but during the start up tone a female voice breaks in very strongly before the tone resumes and the ZY8 call is made.

After some absence E22 came back.

E22 Its Back! Sunday 4th December 2005 I was alerted by a good friend to E22 in progress. Recording log:
(Note pips are from my FRG100 set 15 seconds early for top of hour) Each section is marked with a half second gap.
FY6 on 15040 just two calls 10:07 as I arrived late at the radio! Tone then LW4 on 17387 11:00 (nasty buzz) Tone then LW4 on 15040 11:05 (note echo) 11:59 tone on 17387 thumps/bumps then SY2 12:05 tone and SY2 on 15040. (note echo) Track ends. 6min 38s.

E22 Recorded 07/12/2005 from 08:25 Wednesday. A surprise catch this one.
Carriers were up on 15040 and 17387 at 07:39 suggesting a 07:30 TX that I missed!
The recording starts off on 17387 with some background sounds during the extended open mic carrier. Listen closely is that XSW (S32) Squeaky wheel? repeated twice then another sample of a high pitched sound! Then a unstable tone comes up followed by a heavily accented
Foxtrot Papa three call. The calls end and the tone returns! After this the recording switched to 15040 for the 08:35 TX. the tones have been reduced to save file size. Listen for mic noise, and various other background sounds.

E22 Sunday 11th December 2005.
My home brew automated record and alarm facility triggered at 07:32 this morning.
My radio had been tuned to 17387 during the night and the squelch was set for S7.
At 07:35 E22 came up with QR7 at S7 to +10db with deep fades! the usual buzz was not noted!
carrier dropped at 07:38. I think this was the second sending of a 07:30 TX.
(Rec1)

At 08:24 now on 15040 a S5 to S9 carrier came up. 08:29 tone came up 08:30 E22 sends YB8.
(Rec2)
09:23 S9 carrier up on 15040 tone up 09:29 (much mic fumbling noted) 09:30 E22 sends KU3.
However during "This is" the signal dropped off making the heard TX This--- Kilo Uniform three.
Lots of background sounds S8-9 variable. 09:35 S8-9 tone up on 17387 09:36 E22 sends KU3 carrier off at 09:37.
(Rec3)

E22 Today 14/12/2005 Wednesday after much activity from 07:00 E22 has been busy, the last two messages seemed to be repeats of Sunday 11th December, here is one to compare! 12:00 14/12/05 15040khz.

E22 on new frequency! 14/12/2005 no sign of the expected carrier on 15040 or 17387 so I tuned to a frequency a radio ham had reported as having something sounding like E22 on it last year, bingo 11620 khz one of All India Radios frequencies had the carrier followed by the tone then E22 calling Delta Sierra 2.

We have noted other types of transmissions on E22 known frequencies, these have been voice and even music and as of today cricket commentary plus an advert for Honda! check here for some sound clips but also look again at the E22 TX above 22/07/2005 from 13:59 on 15040 KHz same voice?

15040 observations 02/12/2005 Friday A Huge carrier came up at 09:23 with a large mains hum (S+10) Indian music was then broadcast at various signal levels. Carrier dropped and came back quite often then stabilised. Carrier and music stopped at 09:30. Recording starts off at low
volume but then gets louder for this quite pleasant little tune!
by Lata Mangeshkar.

14/12/05 Wednesday.
Things were not looking to promising then suddenly at 07:17 on 17387 a carrier came up then to my surprise I head a English speaking man start talking about Sri Lanka and cricket!
He then handed over to his colleague who started speaking in a foreign language that sounded very like the one on my clip of 15040 E22 TX recorded 22/07/2005 from 13:59.

If you would like more information on this and other number/mystery stations then you should consider joining the Enigma 2000 Yahoo group! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/enigma2000/

This is a strictly controlled active group and provides NewsLetters and Control Lists for its members. Maybe I'll see you there?

UPDATE UPDATE

16th December 2005 E22 has been identified

We have discovered that E22 is actually test transmissions from All India Radio, the engineers use the codes to identify different settings and locations!

Note that Enigma 2000 has now declassified E22 and removed it from the Control List as it has been found to be a broadcast station.

Just in case proof were needed as to E22's origins today Sunday 17th September 2006 we found a carrier on 15040 AM but at 12:25 UTC a Indian announcer came up with a music programme, this is a mp3 from the show 1.33mb.
