With a skyline dominated by the ruins of an abbey founded in AD 657, Whitby can boast a long, rich and varied history. By the 18th century, the town had grown to become one of the country's principle seaports and for many years, thrived on it's maritime industries.As well as being a tourist centre for the nearby North York Moors and Cleveland Hills, modern day Whitby is a popular seaside holiday resort with plenty to offer all age groups. * In 1997 the visit of the replica ship 'H M Bark Endeavour' captured the imagination of thousands. The 'Endeavour Homecoming - Whitby 2002' is also expected to be a great success. The ship will be berthed in Whitby and open to the public from June 22nd to August 12th.

* The ever popular Whitby Regatta and Carnival runs from the 10th to the 12th of August. Included are car & bike displays, armed forces displays, fancy dress, rowing races, stalls and a large fun fair.
* Opened at Easter 2002 for a cost in excess of £5 million, the Whitby Abbey Visitor Centre uses the most modern technology to give a fascinating glimpse into the past of one of the country's most ancient seaports.
