The rhythm section can be very a sensitive creature.
This photo was taken in the studio during the making of " Four Chums Play Pops ". An affectionate meeting of drums and bass. It
has been said that if you play the album backwards... you will hear
an ancient Chinese proverb say...

"Chris

of you by a conversation about Sergeant Pepper. I used to see
u in Plumpton a lot about 3 years ago with a mate of mine James
Dell. You were f#'*ing great, cheers.
"A
Chuckle brother" - I just wanted
to say how much I enjoyed your gig at the 40th Birthday Bash in
the woods last Saturday. I've never heard the band sound so good
- maybe it was the energy from the crowd or the volume or just
a highly polished performance I'm not sure but you sounded so
good that night I just had to say thanks for a really good one.
I'm growing very fond of "You really got me" just because it's such an aggressive riff and always seems to get the place rocking and Ray Davies writes a lovely lyric doesn't he ? Have you ever thought of playing the Who's Substitute ? How did the Prince of Wales gig go ? I decided that 3 times in a week was a but much so I dipped out of that one - you can only get so much of a good thing. Take care and we hope to see you soon "Carnaby
Barnaby" -
The above mentioned "chuckle brother"
is officially the number one Tar Babies fan, having broken all
previous records for attendance and showing no respect whatsoever
for international borders, he is up there in the annals of history
as the one most likely to assassinate one of the band. But we
love him anyway......but please, just make sure it's quick and
decisive and preferably one of the rhythm section.
"Nicki"-
I can't thank you boys enough for your brilliant
performance on Saturday night, I don't think that I could not
have chosen a better band if I had searched the entire country!
You were totally tip-top in every way, and judging by the emails
and texts I have been receiving since Saturday everyone else thought
so to. Many, many thanks, see you soon, Nicki .
"Chris"-
Thanks for a great night yesterday. You
guys are still the classiest act around and I especially liked
my generation and your new backing singers!

Stevie"The
Ladies Man" Watts
aka "Fingers"
is joining the band for September as Tommy
is having his entire flat redecorated with Greek pillars and shag
pile by a builder called Caligula. Tommy said.......and I quote
" I need time out from the band to rekindle the Roman Emperor
in me. It seems that like most builders these days Caligula is
stretching the work out and taking on the odd gladiator job at
the weekends down at the Lido so I will have to drain my Jacuzzi
of ass's milk and move in there.....but at least my Spartacus
bed has arrived from Argos which nails neatly up against the wall,
thus making plenty of space for my bust of Caesar and entire collection
of leather gimp masks".
"Tommy"
- Ooh that rotter Carnaby Barnaby! Which scoundrel told him? These
damned builders are not only horribly expensive but downright
disloyal! Anyway instead of the shagpile I'm having the Burgundy
Axminster and some Leopardskin scatter cushions. I think you'll
all agree that the columns will look much better than my original
choice of pine cladding and formica surfaces and I'm getting rid
of the hostess trolley and seventies mini-bar. Now where's that
fop Caligula? Toodle-pip!
PS No love toys for Carnaby Barnaby when I return! "Carnaby
Barnaby" -
Joolz is a very modest chappie and he insisted
I didn't tell anyone......he didn't want a big fuss made, but
I've just got to tell someone before I burst. He is the "Driving
a mini round a field speed trials" champion of the band.
There I feel much better now.
"Tommy"
- Of course until *ALL* the band members complete their heats
a full and accurate decision is still pending.Your humble adjudicator.
PS To say nothing of the much-hyped Tar Babies Go-Cart Derby.
a
careful driver! - Carnaby Barnaby
would you tell Joolz not to be so humble, winning
that race is a truly momentous occasion & one of which he
should be proud! (err .. by the way, is it not true that somewhere
amongst the band theres a mini car driver?.. whats
his excuse for not winning?!.. outclassed obviously!) Congratulations,
lets just hope this triumph doesnt cause a rebellion amongst
the boys!
From a careful driver! "Emma
And Pauline" - I would just
like to say a big thank you. The Tar Babies came up trumps once
again and played like real dudes. The whole day was absolutely
fab and you gave it the best end to a day once again thanks.

"Chuckle
brother no 1" -
Well what a special treat Friday night was at the Royal Wells
!
We kind of guessed that we were in for a treat when we noticed just how much effort the band had taken with the kipper ties and frilly shirts - some of them even matched ! There seemed to be an air of expectation due to the added element of the " drummer to the stars " Ash whose return was much lauded by the fellow members of the band and certain members of the female audience for reasons I'll explain later. The venue was easily the best I've ever seen the Tarbabies play in ,it had great sound , enough room to dance and it looked like my lounge but with more people and for once it didn't feel like a fight was going to break out at any moment ( that's in the bar not in my house ) From the first number we were indulged by the usual polished performance we've come to expect from the best live band in the area but like a new and improved washing power the "Ash Element "seemed to invigorate the band to enjoy themselves even more than usual if that was possible ! Joolz was smiling knowingly more than usual when he was spontaneously breaking into solo's and playing opening bars you wished you recognised earlier and Lee seemed to morph musically with Ash to produce a Vulcan like mindmelt drum/bass duo/solo then to top it Tiny Tommy Tucker who usually provides the subtle but humorous moments got so carried away on his tambourine members of the audience were getting showered in bits that were breaking off. During these moments of awe and wonder a strange kind of telepathy passed between all the musso's in the room i.e. the Men. They would stop looking at the band, look at each other, raise thier eyebrows in a kind of "Wow ! these guys are good ! " expression, then they'd look at the Ladies who had a simular look on thier faces but much to the disappointment of the Men it wasn't the cohesive musical ability of the 4 members of the band that was causing them all to gel, it was the rakish good looks of Ash the drummer that was keeping them collectively captivated. So much for talent eh ? So my advice is no matter how talented he is and no matter how much of of a groovy drummer he is please don't invite him back because If I hear the answer to the question " aren't these guy's good " ? I get "Yes I really fancy the drummer ! " one more time I'll be going to see ABBA tribute bands . Take care guy's alway's a pleasure never a chore. "Lee"
- OOOPS! Wrong website sorry! Oh by the way your bass player
is a god.
"Tommy"
- It says that Len played bass with
England but as I'm sure you'll agree closer inspection reveals
it was clearly Jane Asher the cake-baking actress.

can't. He does play an exeedingly good cookin' groove though.

A very entertaining evening was had by all at the Prince of Wales
in Tunbridge Wells on Sunday evening. Whether you were a member
of the Supergrass lookalike contingent or the Johnny Vegas supporters
club, or even the angry drunken female corner you couldn't help
but be impressed buy the Tarbabies ability to perform under adverse
circumstances. Firstly the full on style of the drummer seemed
to have an adverse affect on his own snaredrum in the first half
until it gave up in protest sounding flatter than a pancake, then
magically during an instrumental to cover the aforementioned loss
of snare a member of the Anthill Mob ( probably Pockets ) produced
another one which was installed mid number so that the banging
and crashing could resume. Subtle this man is not.
Later as the Student/Hippy hybrid throng grew thicker and more obtrusive Joolz's guitar was called for to placate the heaving masses but disaster ! right at the crucial moment it went out of tune so a brief but impressive bass solo by Lee the "God of Slap" was called for. Strings sorted the band played on but a profound effect had come over Lee - he was playing like a man possessed - he was charged to the hilt, so much so he was double timing during " You really got me" was there no stopping this band ? Oooh's and Ahhh's emulated from the audience in amazement of how professional this bunch of groovy funsters were holding the whole thing together even when things had conspired against them. Finally jaws that were slightly agape fell open when Tiny Tommy Tucker hit notes higher than he really should be capable of for the frenzy of Focus. Even the more drunken faction of the pub stood up and took notice of the awesome talent that propels this band, so if you ever get chance see this band treat yourself, you'll thank yourself later. PS Take a leaf out of Sam and Penny's book and get to the front before the students do ! "Carnaby

Sorry to any groovers who turned up to the Orson
Welles (T.Wells) on Friday. The manager had decided to
wait until we'd set up! before he slithered down his stairs to
mentioned that he wasn't going to pay us our agreed fee.
Beware also the Flying
Dutchman (T.Wells) who are more than happy to blow out
it's bands at 24hrs notice. The lesson to be learnt here is that
any profession has it's rats. Still....... there are plenty of
great boozers with great guv'nors and guv'noressess who do understand
that musicians are just like everyone else.....trying to earn
an honest living.

Apologies to anyone who ventured out to "The
Fire Station gig" , yet another gig to appear only
to disappear in suspicious cercumstances and without warning.
The boys are beginning to take it all too personally and they've
booked themselves a year at "The Priory Clinic". Joolz
now wants to retire (about time) and start a Jack Russell farm,
Lee wants to re-string his old protection racket up in the East
End and Tommy wants to re-trace his roots, so he's gonna have
a grade one. Morale is low, they can't take it any more I tell
ya! The really weird thing is that all these "problem gigs"
are in Tunbridge Wells and infact two of them are in the same
road! Is it possible perhaps that there is a strange lay line
connecting these venues, in which case they're unlikely to take
any bookings there ever again, unless of course they can get the
area exorcised first. Yet another
spooky but true story from the dark
side of rock'n roll.
"Long
Serving Fans"-
No don't do it guy's we still think you are fantastic.....we cannot
survive without the pounding vibes of the "Tarbabies".
Thoroughly enjoyed the weekend gig, thank you.....Oh Tommy...please

"Markycurry"
- Hello Carnaby Bumblebee ! At last you and your merry band of
minstrels and ne'er-do-wells are venturing westwards (The
Horsham Festival) like the pioneers of yesteryear ! So
apart from yerself, who will be gracing the line-up with their
presence on that day ? Will we get to see the elusive and mysterious
"Ash The Bash" ? I only ask because your line-up is
about as fluid as my cat's bowels after a night on the Guinness,
so any clue would be nice. And before you say so, yes I prevent
the cat from going near the black-stuff now !Cheers.
"Carnaby
Barnaby" -
Well "MarkyCurry", I believe the line up to be Joolz,
Lee, Tommy and Smiley on that fateful day on the Horsham bandstand
NOW STARTS AT 3PM .
You can never be too sure about these things, as the boys are
an entity unto themselves. Now weird I know...but if you put the
name "Horsham" through a spell checky thing...... you
get Hiroshima !!!! so
bring plenty of aftersun

Dear All, Well could I just say to all those
who visit this site how much we all enjoyed the last gig at the
Villagers at Vigo last night. I think all those that know there
are two premier venues for The Tarbabies to shine in the county, one
is the aforementioned Villagers and the other is The Royal Wells
Hotel in Tunbridge Wells. I'm not sure what it is about these
gigs but the groovy funsters seem to positively glow when they
perform at either. If any new visitors to this site need any convincing
that The Tarbabies are the finest live band in the local get your
cute little butt cheeks to either of these venues and you'll go
away with the knowledge you've been entertained by 4 of the nicest,
most approachable friendly musicians you could meet . Oh yeah
they play pretty good as well. But back to last night , we knew
we were in for a treat because much to my dismay Ash and his acute
good looks had returned to give the The Tarbabies to complement
their special groove and my girlfriend something to look at. Lee
had brought the Rickenbacker and his usual impish grin and Tommy
and Joolz had brought their usual natty attire together with their
uncanny ability to play the first few bars of a song that you
can never quite remember then just when you get the hook line
they are already both on to something else daggnabbit !
Having said that I've always found it funny that the rest of the band usually gets changed into the Lionel Blaires, wide collar shirts and kipper ties just before the gig but Joolz arrives dressed ready for action. The band put on a stunning gig including the return of the (albeit requested) Big One which we've all missed and other favourites but with one exception - a song that we and nor it seems the rest of the band had heard before judging by the expression on Lee's face. I've never seen him look so unnerved as Joolz played on waiting for the rest of the band to catch up. If anyone knows what the mystery song and artist was answers on a postcard please. It was the cause of much amusement but it only added to a very entertaining evening in a venue that lends itself to this kind of popular beat combo. Thanks again for delivering another well honed performance. Much respect Chuckle Brother NO1 "Carnaby Barnaby" - Well Chuckle Brother no1, That delightful but lesser known ditty was in fact "Rene" by The Small Faces. It's all about a very colourful lady of the dock's and is host to the most charming and picturesque descriptions of life, not so much on the ocean waves but off of them. Perhaps one of the deepest and most meaningful toons the band plays to date |
