From the very first notes to come out of our newly arrived SVS 16-46 PCi subwoofer my wife and I were grinning like kids! And what deep notes they were too!We hurriedly tried a number of our favorite CDs. We were not to be disappointed! The room was filled with incredibly clean, loud and undistorted bass.
Without any attempt to balance the subwoofer with our stereo floorstanding speakers, the PCi just seemed to work so incredibly well, straight from the box.
I just set the gain (volume) on the subwoofer amplifier to where it sounded best. (midway between 2 & 3) The crossover (low pass filter) was simply set at the minimum frequency of 40Hz to match my speakers' roll-off point. (This was later raised to 60Hz after careful testing to smooth the frequency response perfectly).
We could not get enough of this amazing SVS bass! CD after CD was tried. From clasical symphonies to electric folk. From choral music to baroque recorder quartets. From heavy metal to classical organ from Vierne. All sounded freshly magical! So much clearer regardless of obvious bass content.
Some CDs, that we had played dozens of times before the sub's arrival, literally frightened us! The whole house was suddenly shaking to tracks we thought we knew intimately. I have listed a few of our favorites on a previous page for your own entertainment to see if you agree. You may need an SVS subwoofer to understand fully though.
The best description of SVS bass is that it is completely effortless. It has the ability to startle the listener. To go from absolute silence to near deafening and return to silence instantly.
No boom or overhang has ever been sensed from the very first moments on any kind of music or film sound! Bass drums sound like real drums. Flat and hard and being struck. Nothing like bass guitars with their soft leading edges, tone, sustain and decay that you get with poor subwoofers!
Even raising the relative volume (gain) compared with the main stereo speakers does not affect its ability to simply get louder completely without effort or distortion. 110dB is within its capability at very low frequencies. These subwoofers can make every surface in the room vibrate like a big deisel motor. Things will rattle in closed rooms at the other end of the house! It will feel as if your chair is sinking through the wooden floor as it vibrates like a jelly on steroids!
My wife has a taste for heavy rock music. Metallica and Satriani are particular favorites. She quickly learnt that setting the gain on the SVS to 12 o'clock did not harm the sub at all. But added tremendously to the impact of her music! It seemed a good idea because it meant lower overall levels on the stereo amp and speakers.
Then she started raising the volume on the stereo amplifier to a steady 100dB! With the SVS naturally responding in kind. The house really sounds in danger of collapse at times. Enormous fun! Living rurally-detached sometimes has real advantages because there is nobody living on the floor above or below to worry about!
We tried some video action films and these did not disappoint either. The rumbles, bangs and thuds were so clean, so unexpected and so loud, that we would literally duck for cover at times!
A DVD player was quickly purchased to make the most of films. A NAD T 533 was added to the equipment rack. Though still 'only' in stereo, rather than surround sound, we started enjoying films even more!
The SVS is such a clean and realistic sounding subwoofer. So devoid of audible distortion. So effortless in its ability to raise the roof when called for. It works incredibly well on all kinds of listening material.
It even adds greatly to the pleasure of everyday satellite TV watching. Films, action series and even ordinary programmes benefit greatly from clean bass. Vehicles, trains, street scenes and work places take on a whole new sense of realism when TV sound is of such high quality.
