Subjective response
The original mains cable, though very generous in length, was simply too short to reach my intended subwoofer position between the TV and right hand floorstanding stereo speaker.

I used a simple mains extension lead to start with. But really wanted a better solution.

It took some searching to find a removable plug to match the original type. Many cables are supplied with moulded-on plugs these days.

I tried a number of computer and hifi shops without success looking for removable plugs.

Powerswitch and un-earthed IEC socket
I eventually found a short rubber mains lead with removable plugs in a DIY superstore. I also bought 6 metres (20 feet) of flexible, black, rubber-sheathed 2 x 1.5mm cable at the same time.
Note: The sub is not earthed so I did not need three core mains lead.

I chose a generous cross section of copper in the mains cable to cater for the greater length and to help the dynamics when the amplifier draws heavy current.

The other end is connected to my dedicated hifi mains spur sockets. Which are connected by a heavy cable run directly from the consumer unit. These sockets feed only the AV/Hifi components.

Here's a shot of the IEC female plug in place.
