The SVS PCi drive unit.
The 12" drive unit in the 16-46 Pci has a long-throw Kevlar impregnated pulp cone with 2.5" voice coil. It has a ventilated pole piece & large double stacked magnet. A roll surround and 8" Nomex spider. This, coupled with the 4" diameter double flared reflex port, makes effortless deep bass.

I borrowed this picture from the SVS website as I had no desire to remove my drive-unit just to photograph it! The 16-46 is the largest and lowest tuned model of the three sizes of PCi subwoofer at 46" high and 16" diameter.

The ISD driver shown has been upgraded to an NSD model in 2006.

The smart top grill
The top grill is black perforated metal and almost impossible to see through. Somewhere in there is a highly flared 4" reflex port pushing out the lowest frequencies around 16Hz (the tuning point). Great care was obviously taken to avoid noises and rattles. The grill also neatly stops things being dropped into the port onto the back of the driver magnet far below.

(This flash photo actually captures far more detail than the eye can see!)

The dark cloth covering the cylinder.
The smart cloth covering the cylinder is difficult to photograph. It is a high quality, black upholstery velour which has a very slight sheen in bright daylight.

I consider this finish an excellent choice. It offers a neutrel appearance that does not draw attention to itself. The cloth is easily replaced if it should be damaged in an accident.

From my own experience, it does not take long to completely ignore the sub's physical presence in the listening room.

Big Foot!
The base plate is big enough to make the SV cylinder subwoofer incredibly stable. With the heavy speaker drive unit at the bottom of the tube the centre of gravity is very low. Tilt angle would have to exceed 30 degrees to get the sub even close to falling over. Yet the sub is quite easy to move about on carpet by tilting slightly and rolling. Or a bearhug lift can be used to carry it any distance.

The short stand-off pillars allow the 12" downward facing drive-unit to fire deep bass omnidirectionally across the floor while protecting it from damage.

Please note that a new driver (the NSD) is announced for mid 2006. The cylinder models are now no longer available in Europe.
