Cherry Morris

A member of the RSC in the early years, 1961-63, Cherry Morris played Lady Capulet in Romeo and Juliet (Peter Hall, RST, 1961); Jura/Aniko in The Caucasian Chalk Circle (William Gaskill, Aldwych, 1962); Refugee in Curtmantle (Stuart Burge, Aldwych, 1962); Andromache in Troilus and Cressida (Hall, Aldwych, 1962); Sister Claire in The Devils (Peter Wood, Aldwych, 1962); Ceres in The Tempest (Clifford Williams, RST, 1963); Portia in Julius Caesar (John Blatchley, RST, 1963); and Eleanor, Duchess of Gloucester/Lady Bona in The Wars of the Roses (Hall, RST, 1963).

Remarkably, the character of Eleanor took her back to the RSC twenty-five years later—Adrian Noble's The Plantagenets (RST, 1988, Barbican, 1989). Now the right age for the senior character parts, she saw out the millennium with the RSC, working as hard as any young girl in the Company. Most prominently, she played Queen Margaret in successive productions of Richard III. The complete list: Queen Elinor in King John (Deborah Warner, TOP, 1988, Pit, 1989); Harriet Stanley in The Man Who Came to Dinner (Gene Saks, Barbican, 1989); Autie Rezi in Julius Hay's Have (Janice Honeyman, Pit, 1990); Aemilia in The Comedy of Errors (Ian Judge, RST, 1990, Barbican, 1991); Polina in The Seagull (Terry Hands, Swan, 1990, Barbican, 1991); Caroline Pontefract in A Woman of No Importance (Philip Prowse, Barbican, 1991, also Theatre Royal Haymarket); Queen Margaret in Richard III (Sam Mendes, TOP, 1992, Small-scale Tour, 1992, Swan, 1993); Chorus in Murder in the Cathedral (Steven Pimlott, Swan, 1993, Pit, 1994); Old Lady Squeamish in The Country Wife (Max Stafford-Clark Swan, 1993, Pit, 1994); Madame Sylvie in Maureen Hunter's Transit of Venus (Alison Sutcliffe, TOP, 1993); Mrs Fezziwig in A Christmas Carol (Judge, Barbican, 1994-95); Boyette in Love's Labour's Lost (Judge, Barbican and Tour, 1995); Queen Margaret in Richard III (Pimlott, RST, 1995, Barbican, 1996); Duchess of Vaubricourt in Eric Emmanuel Schmitt's La nuit de Valognes (Paul Garrington, TOP, 1996); Old Lady in Henry VIII (Gregory Doran, Swan 1996, Young Vic, 1998); Mistress Quickly in The Merry Wives of Windsor (Judge, RST, 1996); Lady Mulligan in Camino Real (Pimlott, Swan, 1997, Young Vic, 1998); Mariya in Uncle Vanya (Katie Mitchell, Young Vic, 1998); Agave/Minerva/Nurse in Tales from Ovid (Tim Supple, Swan, 1999, Young Vic, 2000); Ivy in The Family Reunion (Noble, Swan, 1999, Pit, 2000); and Old Edie in A Warwickshire Testimony (Alison Sutcliffe, TOP, 1999).
