Jo McInnes One of the discoveries of the 1996/97 season, Jo (or Jay as she was then credited) McInnes gave memorable performances as the servant girl Hester in The Herbal Bed (Michael Attenborough, TOP, Pit, not West End) and Peggy in The General from America (Howard Davies, Swan). She has continued to win acclaim for her sensitive character playing: Nellie Gywn in April de Angelis's Playhouse Creatures (Peter Hall Company, Old Vic, 1997); a tender but unsentimental Sonya in the RSC's Young Vic production of Uncle Vanya (Katie Mitchell, 1998); a girl footballer in the television series Playing the Field (Catherine Morshead, BBC, 1998); Queen Isabella in Edward II (Richard Grandage, Sheffield Crucible, 2001); Sarah Kane's 4.48 Psychosis (James Macdonald, Royal Court, 2001); Keith Allen's assistant in the Charlotte Gainsbourg movie Ma femme est une actrice (Yvan Attal, 2001); Hesp in Naomi Wallace's The Inland Sea (Dominic Dromgoole, Oxford Stage Company, 2002); Shona in Glyn Cannon's On Blindness (Vicky Featherstone et al, Paines Plough, Soho Theatre, 2004); and Martirio in Lorca's The House of Bernarda Alba (Davies, NT Lyttleton, 2005). She gained her early experience at the Haymarket Theatre, Basingstoke, the Salisbury Playhouse and the Angles Theatre, Wisbech. Work on the London fringe included Medea (Duke's Head), Tales of Christmas Past (Polka Children's Theatre), Dora (Hen and Chickens), The Last of the Just (Arts Theatre), and The Mayflies (Attic Theatre). Her first high-profile production was Howard Davies's NT revival of The Children's Hour (Lyttelton, 1994). |
