Aidan McArdle

Aidan McArdle trained at RADA (1995-96) having already appeared at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, as Osric in Hamlet, Don Parritt in The Iceman Cometh and Dromio in The Comedy of Errors (1993). On leaving the Academy he built a reputation on the London stage: Ya'acov in Julian Garner's The Flight into Egypt (John Dove, Hampstead Theatre, 1996); Raymond in the Beauty Queen of Leenane (Garry Hynes, Druid Theatre Company, Tour and Royal Court, 1996); Martin in When Brains Don't Count, Paul in In the Family, Joe in The Future is Betamax (Young Playwrights Festival, Royal Court, 1996); Robbie in Shopping and Fucking (Max Stafford-Clark, Out of Joint, Tour, 1997); and Kaite O'Reilly's Yard (Julie-Anne Robinson, Bush, 1998).

He joined the RSC in 1999. In Michael Boyd's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream (RST, 1999, Barbican, 1999-00, New York, 2000) McArdle's singular Puck, cool and satirical, administered the potion by tossing soil from a wheelbarrow onto the lovers and watering it from a tin watering can. Also in the season at the RST and Barbican he played Roderigo in Othello (Michael Attenborough), and Alexas/Thidas in Antony and Cleopatra (Steven Pimlott). During the fringe festival he performed Conor McPherson's Rum and Vodka (Helen Raynor, Buzz Goodbody Studio, TOP). He next became only the third actor in the RSC's history to play Richard of Gloucester in both Henry VI Part 3 and Richard III ('This England: the Histories', Boyd, Swan, 2000-01, Young Vic, 2001, he was also Charles in Henry VI Part 1).

Subsequent theatre work: Murphy in Tennessee Williams's Stairs to the Roof (Lucy Bailey, Minerva, Chichester, 2001); the title role in A Prayer for Owen Meany (Mick Gordon, NT Lyttelton, 2002); Pip in David Farr's adaptation of Great Expectations (Gordon Anderson, Bristol Old Vic, 2003); Orestes to Catherine McCormack's Iphigenia in Goethe's Under the Curse (Joe Hill-Gibbins, Gate, 2003); Simon in Frank McGuinness's There Came a Gypsy Riding (Attenborough, Almeida, 2007).

Films: Ella Enchanted (2004); Morris: a Life with Bells On (2008); Richard Brinsley Sheridan in The Duchess (2008).

Television: Dudley Moore in Terry Johnson's Not Only But Always (Channel Four, 2004); Einstein in E=mc² (Channel Four, 2005); Footprints in the Snow (ITV, 2005); Stravinsky in Riot at the Rite (BBC, 2005); All About George (ITV, 2005); Perfect Day (Channel Five, 2005); Marple: Sleeping Murder (ITV, 2006); Jane Eyre (BBC, 2006); Green (BBC, 2007).
