Growing up in the Rhondda Valley, Daniel Evans won prizes for acting (including the Richard Burton award at the 1990 National Eisteddfod) and appeared in children's programmes on Welsh-language television. From the Guildhall School in London he joined the RSC's 1994 Stratford company, cast as Boy in Henry V (Matthew Warchus, RST), Citizen in Coriolanus (David Thacker, Swan) and Flute in A Midsummer Night's Dream (Adrian Noble, RST). After the transfer to London in 1995 he succeeded Toby Stephens as Lysander. The following year he travelled with the production to New York.
In 1997 he joined the National to play Neil in Peter Gill's Cardiff East (Cottesloe) and the title role in Peter Pan (John Caird, Olivier). As a member of Trevor Nunn's 1999 NT Ensemble, he was Patroclus in Troilus and Cressida (Nunn, Olivier), Lorenzo in The Merchant of Venice (Nunn, Cottesloe), and the title role in Candide (Caird, Olivier).
Another singing role, Charley in Merrily We Roll Along, directed by Michael Grandage at the Donmar Warehouse, brought him an Olivier award. At the Royal Court, alongside Jo McInnes and Madeleine Potter, he performed Sarah Kane's poetic 4:48 Psychosis (James Macdonald, 2000, 2001), and appeared in two plays by Christopher Shinn, Other People (Dominic Cooke, 2000) and Where Do We Live (Richard Wilson, 2002). He toured as Osvald in Ibsen's Ghosts (English Touring Theatre, 2002), and was Ariel to Derek Jacobi's Prospero in The Tempest at the Sheffield Crucible and the Old Vic (Grandage, 2002-03).
In 2003 he returned to the RSC to play Angelo opposite Emma Fielding in Measure for Measure (Sean Holmes, RST) and Posthumous in Cymbeline (Cooke, Swan). In 2004, at the Sheffield Crucible and the Donmar Warehouse respectively, he was Betty in Caryl Churchill's Cloud Nine (Anna Mackmin) and Kringelein, the dying bookkeeper, in Grand Hotel (Grandage).
Television credits include Herbert Pocket in Tony Marchant's version of Great Expectations (BBC, 1999), Love in a Cold Climate (BBC, 2001), and Daniel Deronda (BBC, 2002).
