Duchêne Kate Duchêne has given memorable performances at the RSC as Queen Elizabeth in the Simon Russell Beale Richard III (Sam Mendes, TOP and Small-scale Tour, 1992, Swan 1993); Chorus in Murder in the Cathedral (Steven Pimlott, Swan, 1993, Pit, 1994); a highly-strung Jessica in The Merchant of Venice (David Thacker, RST, 1993, Barbican, 1994); Alithea in The Country Wife (Max Stafford-Clark, Swan, 1993, Pit, 1994); Amanda in The Relapse (Ian Judge, Swan, 1995, Pit, 1996); a deeply affecting Varya in The Cherry Orchard (Adrian Noble, Swan, 1995, Albery, 1996, Tour, 1997); Earth Spirit/Martha/Helen of Troy in Faust (Michael Bogdanov, Swan, 1995); and Marie in Woyzeck (Sean Holmes, TOP, 1996). She took over the role of Susanna from Teresa Banham during the West End run of The Herbal Bed (Michael Attenborough, Duchess Theatre, 1997). It was through Sam Mendes that Kate Duchêne came to the RSC. She had previously played the Princess of France and Kaleria respectively in his Chichester productions of Love's Labour's Lost and Summerfolk (both Minerva Studio, 1989), and Carlotta and Amy respectively in his London productions of The Cherry Orchard (Aldwych, 1989) and Kean (Old Vic, 1990, also Toronto). At Chichester, 1989, she also played Leonide in Marivaux's The Triumph of Love (Jeremy Raison, Minerva Studio) and Maud/Betty in Caryl Churchill's Cloud Nine (David Leveaux). In 1991 she joined the National to play Elise in The Miser (Steven Pimlott, Olivier) and Dockdaisy in The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (Di Trevis, Olivier). She gained her early theatre experience at the Octagon Theatre, Bolton, and the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, where she played Lucy in John Clifford's Lucy's Play (1986). As an undergraduate at Cambridge she was a member of the Footlights' (1982). Since leaving the RSC she has played Clytemnestra in Euripides's Iphigenia at Aulis (Katie Mitchell, Abbey, Dublin, 2001); Simone in Naomi Wallace's The Inland Sea (Dominic Dromgoole, Oxford Stage Company, 2002); the mother in Lucy Prebble's The Sugar Syndrome (Marianne Elliott, Royal Court, 2003); and Clytemnestra in Iphigenia at Aulis (Mitchell, NT Lyttelton, 2004). |
