Kevin Doyle

Kevin Doyle was a member of the RSC from 1988 to 96: Holland/Lord Grey in The Plantagenets (Adrian Noble, RST, 1988, Barbican, 1989); Tar/Petulant in The Plain Dealer (Ron Daniels, Swan, 1988, Pit, 1989); Cascabel in Nick Darke's Kissing the Pope (Roger Michell, Almeida, 1989); Mortimer/Mowbray/Tom the Drawer/Chamberlain in Henry IV (Noble, RST, 1991, Barbican, 1992); Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet (David Leveaux, RST, 1991, Barbican, 1992); Cranwell in A Woman Killed With Kindness (Katie Mitchell, TOP, 1991, Pit, 1992); Meluzov in Artists and Admirers (Phyllida Lloyd, Pit, 1992); Bishop of Ely/Duke of Bourbon in the Iain Glen Henry V (Matthew Warchus, RST, 1994, Barbican, 1995); Nicanor in Coriolanus (David Thacker, Swan, 1994, Barbican, 1995); and Demetrius in A Midsummer Night's Dream (Noble, RST, 1994, Barbican, 1995, US Tour, 1996).

Doyle's Demetrius was a whiningly unpleasant creation, both weak and assertive. In this mode, he made an impression playing cuckolded husbands in the television dramas Silent Witness (BBC, 1998) and The Lakes (BBC, 1998-99): in the latter his ordinary school teacher bludgeoned Clare Holman to the death with a monkey wrench—a powerful portrayal of weakness, humiliation and rage.

His pre-RSC theatre work included a season at the Manchester Royal Exchange in 1984—Startop in Great Expectations (Gregory Hersov), Treherne in The Admirable Crichton (James Maxwell); tours with the Cambridge Theatre Company—Cleante in The Miser, Simon in Hay Fever; and Piers in Fay Weldon's Hole in the Top of the World at the Orange Tree, Richmond (1987). Between and since working for the RSC he has played Roderigo in Othello (Paul Unwin, Bristol Old Vic, 1990); Camille in Thérèse Raquin (David Leveaux, Minerva Theatre, Chichester, 1990); an English actor in Frank McGuinness's Mutabilitie (Trevor Nunn, NT Cottesloe, 1997); and Stephen Moore in John Galsworthy's The Mob (Sam Walters, Orange Tree, 2003).

Other television: Coronation Street (ITV); Shine on Harvey Moon (ITV); The Bill (ITV); Blott on the Landscape (BBC, 1985); Auf Wiedersehen Pet (ITV, 1986); Holby City (BBC, 1999); At Home with the Braithwaites (ITV, 2000); Murphy's Law (BBC, 2003); Blackpool (BBC, 2004); The Rotters' Club (BBC, 2005); Big Dippers (ITV, 2005).
