Rudi Davies

The daughter of Beryl Bainbridge, Rudi Davies made her stage debut at the RSC in 1986, playing Dorcas in A Penny for a Song (Howard Davies, Barbican). With her red hair, narrow eyes and mannered vocal style, she was from the start a very distinctive actress. She gave Dorcas the lazy agility of a cat on a hot day. Despite or perhaps because of her individuality she has yet to join the front rank of actresses of her generation. She was in Sam Shepard's A Lie of the Mind at the Royal Court (Simon Curtis, 1987) and she was a striking Sara, angry and tender, to Timothy Dalton's Con in Eugene O'Neill's A Touch of the Poet (David Thacker, Young Vic and Theatre Royal Haymarket, 1988). In 1988 she played Miranda in The Tempest (Jonathan Miller) at the Old Vic, and in 1992 Helena in Robert Lepage's muddy A Midsummer Night's Dream at the National (Olivier). She was convincing if unsympathetic as Trevor Eve's teenage mistress in A Sense of Guilt (1990).

Film appearances include: Mary in The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne (Jack Clayton, 1987); Sammy and Rosie Get Laid (Stephen Frears, 1987); Julie in Resurrected (Paul Greengrass, 1989); Jenny in The Object of Beauty (Michael Lindsay-Hogg, 1991); Jessica in Maria's Child (Malcolm McKay, 1993); and Emma in Frankie Starlight (Michael Lindsay-Hogg, 1995).
