C.P. Taylor's Bandits, a play about organised crime in the northeast during the 1960s, was premiered by a Newcastle community theatre group (1976). Howard Davies's RSC production opened the Warehouse in 1977, and played alongside works by Howard Barker, Edward Bond and Shakespeare (the Ian McKellen Macbeth).
