Arden of Faversham

The author (yet to be satisfactorily identified) of Arden of Faversham (1592) took as his subject the real life murder of a merchant by the merchant's wife and her lover—this alone makes it an unusual Elizabethan play, a domestic tragedy and the first work of popular entertainment based on a crime case. Buzz Goodbody directed Dorothy Tutin in a production that formed part of the RSC's Theatregoround Festival at the Roundhouse. Terry Hands chose the play for his first and only production in the studio theatres; expressionistic lighting and prowling assassins turned the piece into a nightmarish thriller.
