BOWHUNTING
Prehistoric cave paintings
throughout the world depict animals being taken with bow and arrow. Bowhunting
in Scotland and throughout ancient Britain was once commonplace
(this picture depicts Scottish Highland bowhunting scenes from a Pictish stone at Glenferness,
Nairn). Modern hunting methods are more efficient yet growing numbers of hunters around the world are forsaking the advantages of
firearms to hunt again with traditional archery equipment.
Bowhunting is a serious challenge requiring the hunter to have extensive
knowledge of his quarry in order to get within shooting distance, typically
under 25 yards, and well within the scent, sight and sound range of any game
animal.
So not only must trad bowhunters be proficient archers, they must also develop
the difficult skills needed to hunt successfully at these much closer ranges.
Many make their own arrows, or bowstrings, even their own bows adding to the
more natural hunting experience of bowhunting. Some take it even further by only
using primitive materials like natural wood, bamboo, horn, sinew and flint.
Hunting with bow and arrow is almost silent, environmentally unobtrusive and
relatively safe as a missed arrow has a
very short travel compared to a missed bullet. The bow was the first truly effective long range
hunting weapon and in the right hands it remains an effective and ethical weapon
today.
Bowhunting is illegal in the United
Kingdom.
