19/1/2002 - Welcome to a brand new year! How quickly Christmas and the New Year holiday period has come and gone. The year 2002 promises to be another great year for Scarborough Swimming Club.

I have had a number of inquires from old friends such as St Neots, Bradford, Hull and Doncaster about our A/B Gala this year. The date has been finalised for the 8th and 9th of June, although the gala information still requires confirmation, [entry times, events etc.] it does look like it will follow the same format as last years. I ask all interested parties to keep a look at the A/B gala page for final details.

Other changes have been made to the Index home page, hopefully links will be a little easier to find. I've updated the Ridings records [all three divisions] and their links can be found from the main club page, and I also included the Ridings Championship records for the first time.

Another undertaking which I hope to complete soon is to publish the Records for our Annual galas. Needless to say that only the names and times of each event for the 'A' swimmers will be displayed. Perhaps this page will appear in the programme.

Early congratulations go to our College swimmers, Aaron Yeoman, Nathan Renshaw, Adam Harvey and Sean Hodgson, in helping their college to be selected to the School's Swimming Association's finals to be held at Crystal Palace in February.

31/1/02 - We have finalised the details for the A/B grade meet in June, with a few minor changes to the entry times, and with the cost of event entry now costing £2.75 per event [coach's passes £8.00] There may be some changes to the programme, but it is doubtful. [Confirmed as none 5/2/02] The other main change is that the swimmers age is as at the 9th June 2002. Any further advice can be obtain from my email link below.

Other news. Six members of our club were fortunate to be selected for National Open Water Training, which took place at Crystal Palace Swim Centre in London. The lucky six were: Katie Sowersby, Julie Owen, Nathan Renshaw, Aaron Yeoman, Adam Harvey and Sean Hodgson. The swimmers covered some 42km [26 miles!] during two very strenuous days training. Training regimes such as; 100 x 100m [each 100m in about 68 seconds!] 8 x 800m. 2x 3km, and 3 x 1500m. Easy training! Report to follow regarding our performance in the first Ridings Div 1 event of 2002.

5/2/02 - I have finally got around to collating the A Grade records taken from all our gala's since 1997. Many club representatives have asked for this, and I hope it proves a useful source of information. Our club holds the most records with 13, with our nearest rivals Bridlington and Thirsk with 6 a piece. Full details can be found on the above page. It is hoped that I can persuade our committee to include the records in the gala programme!

Many of the more observant will notice there are a few more links on the main home page - namely to M-Swim, where many gala results/details are displayed. I have also joined yet another swim WebRing - these web-rings help to further promote the club.

8/2/02 - The Ridings Div' 1 gala report is now available, as is the small report on the Open Water Development training which took place in Crystal Palace. I have also received the Open Water events calendar which includes the dates for the Grand Prix events, as well as other National and European dates and events.

14/2/02 - Happy Valentine's day to all concerned! We have had a Ridings Div' 3 gala where our Storm team were placed third. I have also revamped the Open Water pages, so now we have a Open water report page for last year's reports and a new one for this year, a new general open water page plus an open water calendar. As a very proactive Open Water Club, we are now part of the European fraternity and will figure as part of their website. I've also written a little report on the 3 lads who swam in the 1500m in the Yorkshire Championships held at Leeds on the 10th February. There is also a General Calendar which can be used by everyone accessed from the main webpage. Any type of event can be placed here - Swimming events - social events - Birthdays etc. Whilst we are still with Open Water, it looks likely that our club's website will take responsibility for NECASA's Open Water Web Pages. [Content to appear later]

10/3/2002 - Managed to get time to write a small report for Ridings Div 3 gala, which was held back in February. A small report for the recently held badge night is also ready, as it the report for the medal's presentation evening, [added 16th] which was held over from last year....

20/3/2002 - Reports for two recent galas added, the Ridings Div 3 gala at Driffield, [16th] and the Yorkshire Bagcat gala held at Leeds [9/10th] Aaron Yeoman and Katie Sowersby will be traveling to Stirling Swimming academy in Scotland to attend an Open Water training event. A report will appear here after they return. Our main webpage can also be accessed at:

This is an alternative to the AOL based main page, and it may [or may not!] load up faster.

6/4/2002 - Another busy time for the club and its swimmers. We are busy taking entries for our A/B gala, which is now known as the Scarborough Jubilee A/B Gala. I have also posted two small reports covering the opening two friendly league galas which were held on the 2nd March and the 23rd March. Both reports can be found on the Friendly League report page.

14/4/02 - I think I've finally up to date at long last! I've made finding the club swimmer's best times easier to locate from the main home page, and links can be found for boys, girls, juniors under 13. The British Championships for 5km and the Commonwealth trials is also been produced, with photos! A photograph has also been added to the Stirling training report. The Yorkshire BAGCAT's have now been completed, with Laurence Mills winning a total of 4 Yorkshire Championship Gold's! Read about it here, and there's a great photograph of Laurence too! I've also added a photo to the Open Water presentation night page. The Committee has had a few recent additions, with me going back on for my third term of office, and Sue Swann also joining the team. By request, I've also put back the old Guest book, in addition to leaving the new one in place - why not visit both? Until next time good people......Paul

26/4/02 - Updates to male and juniors swimmers' times [thanks to those who emailed me!] Ridings 'Storm' report [14th April] from their third gala can be found. The club has had a bumper year in the Yorkshire Championships, with eleven swimmers qualifying for the championships, and an unprecedented 17 medals won. A photo shoot involving all swimmers who took part has been arranged for Wednesday 1st May at 1700 Hrs. Report to follow.........Paul

8/5/02 - Just in case you need reminding, the A/B Gala entries have now closed, and have been full for a number of weeks - Sorry to anyone who didn't get in this year, but please try again EARLY next year! Over 1400 were accepted in 2002.

The club can now boast the boys and girls NECASA 5km champions in the form of Aaron Yeoman and Katie Sowersby. A report and photos can be found here. The same weekend, saw a small number of our swimmers compete in the NECASA Junior and Senior championships held at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. The photo call planned for 1st May has taken place, and a photo will appear on these pages in due course. We have also had swimmers competing in the Harrogate Spa meet, some at Chester-le-street, and traveled to Pickering for a Ridings Div' 1 meet [27th Apr.] The first gala, the one held at Scarborough is also available.

I also ran a small timekeeper's course, to introduce many of our new mums and dads to the gentle art. Oh yes, I have also updated our swimmers times pages too - please be reminded that I do so rely on your input if this is to remain accurate - The links can be found here. I do my best!...Paul

24/5/02 - Another update for you, namely the friendly league gala report from the 11th May, plus continuing to update the juniors best times page. Many thanks to those who have emailed me with their times - it helps!

Another A/B gala will soon be upon us! We are getting prepared for our visitors, and hope that it will be a gala to remember [ for all the right reasons I hope!]

Entry forms for the NECASA Open Water swims held on 29th/30th June here in Scarborough's North bay and Wykeham lake are available. I will also be placing on our open water pages, entry forms for the various Open Water Grand Prix events. There are seven events, and I hope to have as many of the seven as I can get, available from this website - perhaps saving you a visit to the ASA'S website.

A report will appear for the Ridings Div 1 meet and the first Pocklington times meet very soon.. [We came joint first - results to follow]

9/6/02 - After a very busy weekend, out A/B gala has been and gone for this year. The results are on the web and can be found at A/B Gala results 2002. This entry won't be too long, like I said earlier - it has been a long weekend! I've also updated the Gala records to include the 22 that were broken! Other updates have been made to the junior, male and female PB times pages, to reflect the times from the weekend.

I would, however, like to thank our friends from Barnsley, Sheffield, Doncaster, Grimsby, Scarborough Kingfishers, Hull, Loftus, Morley, Minsthorpe, Middlesbrough, Ryedale, Selby, South Holderness, Spenborough, Thirsk, Whitby, and especially Armthorpe and St Neots, for attending our meet, and joining in for what I believe to be an enjoyable gala. (Sorry to anyone who had a seat by the PA System!) I would also like to say 'sorry' to our friends who couldn't be with us this year because we were full up - We hope to see you again next year.

If anyone has any suggestions or criticisms of the weekend, feel free to email me - I will try and do something about it. Oh yes, one final word - ENGLAND FOR THE WORLD CUP!

23/6/02 - As we already know, England didn't make it in the World Cup, but our swimmers have been doing well in the pool!

A number of our swimmers were involved in the British 5km Open water champs held at Holme Pierrepont, report and photo's to be found at the link. Once again, a big 'thank you' to those who have emailed me with their PB times - they have been updated in the relevant pages.

The results for two Pocklington League Galas appear on the results page. We came joint 1st and 2nd. [Reports to follow]

The open water season has just 'kicked off' and many of our swimmers will be taking part in the NECASA 4.5Km events held at Wykeham Lake and the North bay on 29/30th June. Watch this space for the reports. Yours truly will be starter for the events.... more soon folks.

9/7/02 - The NECASA and Open Water Grand Prix events were a great success for two of our swimmers. Aaron Yeoman picked up a Gold and Silver medal from the two swims, and Adam Harvey securing two bronze medals. The result of Aaron's Gold medal triumph was made more acute in that he beat the reigning British Open Water Champion, James Leitch - The first time he had lost in a Grand Prix event for two seasons! - Well done to Aaron! The results from this gala can be downloaded in excel document form. The current male and female standings can also be downloaded, also in an excel document.

The next swim in the Grand Prix is in Scotland, Loch Lubnaig, where the club will have four representatives in this event, which is also the Scottish championships. Watch this space for the results!

Scarborough club have managed to secure one win and a second place in the opening Pocklington league galas of the season. The details can be found on the results page. Some of the Junior times have also been updated on their page. More updates soon.

12/7/02 - I've added the results from the Junior NECASA Open water event and I also have a number of pictures taken at the medals presentation which will appear on the above page in the near future, so please bear with me for a number of days. I will also be placing the Pocklington times gala details on the website too, and once I have secured the Ridings Division 1 results from the team manager, these too will appear....

16/7/02 - Another Open water Grand Prix at Loch Lubnaig. It was such a treat to actually see the sunshine in Scotland, but due to a shortage of safety craft, the senior men probably saw more than they would wish to as their swim was delayed for five hours! Another 'first' for Open water was when a airplane landed on the Loch! Much to the concern of the mums, dads and organisers who worried about the swimmers in the water! Just to add to the 'fun' an unauthorised motor speed boat decided to take to the water. This too, had many of the parents keeping an eye on their swimmer in the water! That said, there was no real danger to our swimmers. Adam Harvey and Aaron Yeoman set the pace in the race, and Adam secured the Gold medal in a new open record time. Aaron took Silver, also within the old record time. The next open water event is at Bosworth Water [Market Bosworth] on Sunday 21st July, which should see the attendance of many of the Southern based open water swimmers for only the second time this season. With only three events remaining in the Grand Prix race, both our swimmers are well placed in the competition, not forgetting Katie Sowersby who is placed in 3rd place in the Ladies race. Photographs from all three of the Grand Prix events Scarborough swimmers have attended will later appear on this website.

30/7/02 - Here I am, adding a few notes on my Birthday! - 21 again for me! [I wish - I wish!]

The club's open water season continues, with the fifth Grand Prix swim at Bosworth Water in Leicestershire. We had two swimmers taking part - Aaron Yeoman and Adam Harvey. The results are available as is the report of the swim. I have photo's from all the Open water events this year, and will try and make a big effort to get them on the website soon [my apologies to our Scottish readers]

I have also updated the Grand Prix placing's after 5 events. It now becomes 'crunch-time' for our two main swimmers, with both trying to outdo Scottish International James Leitch for the title. Aaron currently leads the Grand Prix, with Leitch in 2nd place. Adam is presently in 4th place. Katie Sowersby is in 3rd place in the Ladies events, and all three are in action at Salford Quays on Saturday, if we can get into Manchester with the Commonwealth games on! Many of our swimmers will also be competing in Sheffield during the Age Group, National and Youth Championships, so we wish them well in their endeavours....photo's coming soon....Paul

7/8/02 - The penultimate Open Water Grand Prix event at Salford Quays has come and gone, with Scarborough swimmers having mixed results. Aaron Yeoman once again chased James Leitch and finished in second place - He has now been confirmed as runner-up in the Grand Prix event. Well Done Aaron! Katie Sowersby overcome her old enemy - Scotland's Janet McLean to secure the bronze medal in the ladies 5km event. Adam Harvey retired early in the race and Sean Hodgson won his own battle with cramp and finished the race. I have now put up more photo's on the Open Water page so have a look - you might be in it! Due to the large number of photo's I have taken at each of the events, I hope to place another page just for photographs - have a look when it appears!

The club has had representation at Pond's Forge taking part in the National Agegroup and Youth's Championships. Laurence Mills [200m backstroke] ,Paul Hargreaves [200m Breaststroke/400m IM plus team event for Kingston upon Hull] and Julie Owen [100m Butterfly] will be taking part in the competition during the period 5th-12th August. Results to date has seen Laurence achieve 2:47.00 and was placed 31st out of 61 competitors. Paul, swam 2:55.25 for the 200m Breaststroke - somewhat off his PB for event, to finish in 19th Place. He swims again on the 8th [400m IM Team event] Julie swims on Sunday, 11th August. Well done to them for getting to the National Championships!

Open water continues with the National Open Water Age Groups at Holme Pierrepont, on the 31st August. The 10km event is also on the same day, and a number of our swimmers will be taking part. Those expected to swim are: Aaron Yeoman, Sean Hodgson, Katie Sowersby, Julie Owen and Adam Harvey.

26/8/02 - I have the results of Julie Owen's 100m Butterfly event from Sheffield in the Nationals, and her time was 1:07.45, just down on here PB time, but finished a creditable 19th in the country out of 38 competitors. The Kingston upon Hull IM team, of which Paul Hargreaves was part of, just missed out on a final spot, and finished 10th in a time of 4:22.75. Once again, our congratulations go to these three young swimmers for reaching the National Championships - Your club is proud of you!

Our club's 'Les Rouse' Open water takes place at Wykeham Lakes later this afternoon, when the Senior, Junior and Novice events take place. The Seniors swim 3km, with the juniors completing 2km and the novices either 500m or 1km.

The National Open Water Grand Prix event has now prematurely come to an end with the cancellation of the final event scheduled for London's Albert Docks on 8th September. The organisers were forced to cancel the event due to a low number of entries. This club had at least 3 swimmers entered for the event, and it remains to be seen the final outcome of some of the placing's within the Grand Prix, as some of our swimmers have been affected by this cancellation, namely Adam Harvey and Katie Sowersby.

Aaron Yeoman and Bradford's Omar Hussain have been selected to swim an Open Water event in Dunkerque, France also on the 8th September, so congratulations go to them.

All our open water swimmers are now gearing themselves up for the National Junior, and 10km open water championships at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham on Saturday 31st August.

The indoor season starts again later at the end of September.

27/9/02 - Sorry about the gap - I've been tied up for one reason or another. Since my last update, quite a bit has been happening, mainly in the Open Water area of the club. As mentioned above, the National Age Group Open water Championships and 10km took place at Holme Pierrepont on the 31st August, and three of our swimmers came away with medals - Aaron Yeoman - Silver 2km, Katie Sowersby - Silver 2km, and younger brother James who took the bronze medal in the 1.5km event. More information can be found on the open water reports page, plus they Helped Yorkshire to claim runners-up to West of Scotland. There are some pictures too, so have a look!

With the cancellation of the 6th and final event at the Royal Albert Docks, the ASA Open Water Committee have decided to award the prizes based on the swimmers' best three events - not their best four events as in previous years. This decision now means that Aaron Yeoman remains in 2nd place, and the leading Englishman in the Grand Prix, with Adam Harvey now moving up to third place. Katie Sowersby finds herself in 5th place in the ladies competition. Congratulations go to them.

As the leading Englishman in the Grand Prix, Aaron Yeoman was selected by the ASA to represent England in a multi national event called the Great Adventure Race, held in Loch Lomond on the 14th September - Aaron helped the English team to second place, and a full report is available. He was also selected to swim for an English team that was made up from the different swimming districts. Aaron was one of the North Eastern counties representatives. The event, which was swum in Dunkerque, France, was the season finale and district finals, which was the last event in the French Grand Prix events. The team did wonderfully well and came away with the top team Trophy. Well done to Aaron for his selection to the English Open Water team!

He also swam in Dunkerque for a GB team which was made up from representatives from the different swimming districts, and the team then went won the team trophy right under the French team's noses!

On 21st September, our swimmers competed in the Pocklington league gala Div' 1 - The first gala back from the Summer break. The team did well to come second against a strong Kingston-upon-Hull team. The result and report is available. We are still top, for not for long! I have also updated the various swimmers' times pages.
