SCARBOROUGH RECORD BREAKERS WIN FIRST LEAGUE GALA.
Gala 1 - Scarborough Indoor Pool - 19th May 2007

The Premier division of the Ridings league finally got underway last Saturday at the indoor pool when Kingfishers hosted the first gala in this years competition. The league has been expanded this year into four divisions with Scarborough, Kingfishers, Thirsk White Horse and South Holderness, the most successful clubs and all previous winners of this league competing against each other four times during the year in the top division.

The gala had been eagerly anticipated because of the rivalry between the two local clubs and the very close contests last year when three of the four galas were determined by a single point. Scarborough swimming club had enjoyed a successful start to the year in other competitions and were in a confident mood and took an early lead in the gala winning four of the early medley relays. This success continued in the individual events and the freestyle relays with the club ending the evening as convincing winners from South Holderness who narrowly beat Kingfishers into second.

A total of six league records were broken on the night with five of these records going to Scarborough swimmers. Paul Hargreaves improved the Open Breaststroke record to 30.25, - an event where he has lowered the record each time during the past 3 years - and Gareth Mills improved the boys' 14/u fly record to 29.52, breaking the record set by former Scarborough swimmer Neil Parcel set back in 1994. The Scarborough girls relay team of Emily Lucas, Sarah Roberts, Julie Owen and Emma Couch improved the Open freestyle record to 1.56.67 nearly 2 seconds inside the previous best. The 14/u boys team of Gareth Mills, Robert Harvey, David Mort and Jack Colley had a double team success taking two league records which had stood since 1998, the medley was won in 2.08.64 and the freestyle in 1.54.73 both well inside previous league bests. The final record was taken by the South Holderness 10/u girls who were successful in the freestyle team event setting a new best time of 1.08.79 - a record set by Bishop Auckland, way back in 1990.

Other Individual wins for Scarborough came across all the age groups. At 10/u Sam Broadley was a double winner at freestyle and backstroke, Callum Moverley won the Breaststroke. In the same age group for the girls Chloe Pattison who swam impressively all evening was a winner in the freestyle. At 12/u Ben Moverley was another double winner at backstroke and fly with David Couch winning the Breaststroke. Cana Machen who travels from Bridlington to train with Scarborough was another impressive winner in the fly event. The 14/u age group saw Gareth Mills winning the freestyle in addition to the fly and Hannah Broadley took 1st place in the girls fly. In the Open age group Laurence Mills swam a tremendous race in the fly winning against strong competition. Julie Owen was a double winner at fly and freestyle and Sarah Roberts was a confident winner of the Breaststroke.

There was plenty of team success too, the 12/u boys of Ben Moverley, David Couch, Michael Fardoe and Sam Broadley won both medley and freestyle, the Open boys' team of Paul Hargreaves, Laurence Mills, Ross Glegg and Adam Broadley won both of their team races, and the girls Open record breaking quartet also won their medley relay.

SCARBOROUGH - TABLETOPPERS!

Once again, Scarborough Swimming Club have stunned the Current Division 1 Champions Kingfishers, by imposing a comprehensive defeat their way when they completely dominated the proceedings at the 2nd Premier League gala of the season which took place in Thirsk last evening. Nearly 30 clear points separating the two teams this time out. Host team, Thirsk White Horse put on a stronger showing this time out but are still rooted to the bottom of the league. The Scarborough team is currently enjoying a rich vein of form which has seen them take a stranglehold of the League, and are now set to become the first winners of the Premier Division. All the different age groups competed to the best of their ability and it is a credit to all the swimmers for their resounding victory. Report follows:

SCARBOROUGH CROWNED PREMIER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS
Gala 3 - Scarborough Indoor Pool - 6th October 2007

A wonderful team display from Scarborough Swimming Club saw them top the Ridings Premier League when they empathically won their home gala at the Indoor pool last night. All the team put in a fine performance which saw them reach a commanding position after 8 events, on 27 points, South Holderness 23 points, Kingfishers 20 points and Thirsk bringing up the rear with 10 points. The gala saw the return of ex Scarborough Swimmer JJ Wilkinson who swam for the Kingfisher team. He was however, to make no impression on a rampant team performance who have now become the first Premier League Champions with one league gala remaining at South Holderness on the 20th October. The lead was never in danger throughout the gala and focus now was on who would come 2nd in this enthralling gala. At the halfway stage, South Holderness held a narrow lead over Kingfishers with 63 and 61 points respectively. Scarborough were by this time out of sight with 76 points. With a few good swims coming from the final relays, it was Kingfishers, last year's division 1 champions, who finally secured second place with 127 points.
This was a polished performance from the Young Scarborough Squad and the whole team can be proud of their part in a magnificent gala and to totally eradicate the disappointments of last year. Well done to the CHAMPIONS!

Report as follows:

SCARBOROUGH - PREMIERSHIP CHAMPIONS

A Majestic team performance from Scarborough Swimming Club saw them sweep aside the opposition to become the Premier League Champions of the Scarborough & District Riding's Swimming Association with one gala still to swim. Out of 48 events competed throughout the gala, Scarborough won 25 in total and were second in a further 8 events. One new record was achieved, with 37 personal best times coming throughout the event.
With five victories from the first eight medley relay events laid the foundation for one of the most successful club nights in recent years. Such was the dominance of their swimming, Scarborough could even afford the luxury of a disqualification and the subsequent loss of 4 points towards the eventual tally at the end of the night.
The boys under 14 team, Robert Harvey, Jack Colley, Gareth Mills and David Mort took off nearly three seconds from their own 4x50m Medley Relay record which they had set earlier in May, to the new low of 2.06.28. The team also cruised to victory in the Freestyle Relay team which they won in 1.53.33. The boys under 10 team also achieved a notable double in their relays. The team, Sam Broadley, Callum Moverley, Jordan Doubtfire and Luke Goodall won the medley and freestyle events in 1.19.01 and 1.09.25 respectively.
Emma Couch, Emily Lucas, Sarah Roberts and Julie Owen who make up the Girls Open relay team earned maximum points when they secured victories in both their events setting 2.13.95 for the Medley and a sub-2 minute 1.59.43 in the freestyle.
Another exceptional win by Ross Glegg, Adam Harvey, Laurence Mills and veteran thirty something Jon Cheshire who rolled back the years to help his team snatch victory in the Open Medley relay to win in 1.55.14. The under 12 boys team, Sam Broadley, Harrison Beck, Ben Moverley and David Couch also produced a magnificent effort to secure victory in the Medley relay coming home in 2.33.51.
More than half of the individual events were won to add to the points tally of the victorious relay teams with Sam Broadley starting the ball rolling when he won the 10 years 25m Freestyle in a personal best time of 15.57, and he was to do it again in the 25m Backstroke winning in 19.44. Gareth Mills and Hannah Broadley won both butterfly events namely the boys and girls 13/14 years 50m event when they won in 29.67 and 34.53. Gareth was pipped on the line during the 50m Freestyle event and after a Referee's decision was placed second finishing in 27.67. Julie Owen swimming in the Open 50m Backstroke and again in the 50m Butterfly, easily won both events with the backstroke event coming in a personal best time of 34.30 and posting a great time in the butterfly event winning in 31.14.
10 year old Callum Moverley was another start which shone so brightly during his two fine victories which came in the 25m Breaststroke and Butterfly swims, with a personal best achieved in the Breaststroke, 21.25 and a great time for the Fly coming home in 19.75. Ben Moverley,11, was another welcome recipient with a double maximum achieved in the 50m Butterfly and 50m Backstroke events winning in 35.46 and 36.55 respectively.
Emma Couch fended off the opposition to pile on the agony when she secured maximum points in the Open 50m Freestyle coming home in 29.63.
Sarah Roberts produced the goods with a polished performance in the Open 50m Breaststroke winning in 37.89. Laurence Mills had a wonderful finish during the Open 50m Breaststroke and left the others in his wake to secure a further 4 points by taking pole position in a time of 32.33, achieving a personal best time.
Chloe Pattison produced a personal best time of 20.18 during the 25m Backstroke victory as did David Couch winning his Freestyle event in 32.62.
Without the performances of other team members, the club would not have had such a resounding victory and particular praise must be given to all those who produced personal best times during the Championship winning performance; Yuko Crawford, Harrison Beck, Coral Foster, Imogen Kinrade, Georgina Rhodes, Jace Cappleman with special mention to Luke Goodall, Rebecca Cox, Jessica Couch, Adam Harvey, Jack Colley, and Hannah Couch without whose achievements the team would not have achieve its notable victory.

Gala Result:

The team were not as dominant in the relay events as in previous galas but still managed to win 5 team and 6 individual events, and set 28 personal best times along the way. One disappointment was that already relegated Thirsk White Horse did not send a team to compete in the year's final gala.

The boy's team of Marc Slack, Liam Thraves, Adam Broadley and David Mort came home in 1.58.52, and the girls' team consisting of Emma Couch, Emily Lucas, Julie Owen and Hannah Couch won the event in 2.06.39 and secured a further 4 points for the team.
10 year old Callum Moverley set a personal best time during his fine victory in the 25m Breaststroke swam in 21.52, and twenty something Julie Owen was another to produce the goods during her excellent win in the Open 50m Backstroke, winning in 34.26. Ben Moverley, 11, added to the points tally when he set a personal best time of 36.46 on his way to winning the 11/12 50m boys Butterfly event. Emma Couch fought off the attentions of the other teams to win the Open 50m Freestyle in a time of 29.60.
Emily Lucas returned to winning ways when she won the Open 50m Breaststroke in 39.58, and Julie Owen won her second event of the evening when she took all the points in the Open 50m Butterfly, winning in 30.28.
Others to have outstanding swims and achieve personal best times were Jace Cappleman, Yuko Crawford, Georgina Rhodes, Hannah Thraves, Hayley Goodall, Liam Thraves, Marc Slack, Julie Owen, Lauren Squires, David and Michael Mort, Hannah Broadley, Coral Foster, Callum Moverley, and Imogen Kinrade. Their commitment and dedication is commended and without their fine efforts the gala would not have been such a success.
