The children's zoo forms a unique background for children to gain their first experience of wild animals. Unlike larger zoos, which can seem a little daunting to small children, battersea zoo offers the cross-over between normal children's zoos, city farms and larger zoo by combining domestic animlas, like goats, ponies, rabbits, etc, with exotic species like reptiles, primates, otters, meerkats, as well as many different bird species. Over the years, the zoo has for the most part, had to stand alone without investment from the council and has sucessfully attracted visitor numbers of well over 100,000 per year. This has been achieved without advertising or any productive guidance from the council regarding aims or investment. In their wisdom the council have deemed to be on the pulse of the public and presumably are not bothered that many people want the zoo to stay and decided that the residents of wandsworth and London would be better off without the zoo.
