The Crew

The crew from the start was,Andrew Sutherland,(mate),Ike Mckean(driver),James cambell(netman).James Buchan(fishroom man).David Stewart.(cook).Brian skinner(deckhand)& david Stewart(2nd fishroom).Also Sandy Mcleod came with us on Ike's request to help out with the engine.Later on with comings& goings was.alan Innes,Duggie scot.Rocket,Lesley Alexander(flat eric).Mr Brown.Jake Geddes & Archie(as his dad was named Shoories he was called Drizzle.)Also in the summer we used to get david (Bertie)Stewart's pal Clive (Massey)away when he got holidays from cooking at the "1629" Resturant in Lossie.In Peterhead we had 3 lumpers,Glasgow Pat,Glasgow Willie,& Dycie.who were rare caracters,Pat was hitting the drink so we renamed him Pat Simpson when he turned yellow with jandice. ..................... Sometimes when we landed a man called "Mattie"used to come down and sell us Smocked haddocks.One day he asked if Duggie,Bertie & Jim Cambell(Tambo)wanted to buy polish Vodka.They were keen as it was only £5 a Gallan.But were needing someone to taste it as Mattie was a shady guy.Along came Willie who volanteered,took a BIG swig.Two minutes later he fell to the deck.We will take 4 gallans they said,It looks like good stuff.On the way back to sea the next trip I was listening to them discussing the vodka.It was o.k.tambo said but I should have bought more, mine only lasted 2 days. .................... Massey used to come with us on his holidays so that he didn't go to the pub when home.In summer 1999 he was away with us when he started acting funny! at first as he is a bit of a joker we thought he was acting but soon realised he had the d.t's.we knew we had to get him ashore fast so hauls up our gear and sets off for Eigersund (Norway) as it was nearest ,60 mls. (7hours).The crew were tired as they had been working for 26 hours so I told them to lock themselves into the cabin and I would lock Massey in the messdeck so that I could take the boat in myself. After 2 hours Massey was losing the plot.He wanted to get down to the cabin but the door was locked.The next thing i heard was this terrible banging.I went to see Massey hacking at my cabin door with the fire axe.duggie came up the cabin steps to see me rolling about the messdeck with Massey and the axe.We had to tie him to the gally table untill we got ashore.When we got ashore the doctor gave his an injection to calm him down.He told us he had to go home on the next plane and would give him enough pills to keep him happy, but a crewmember would have to fly with him .We opt for Tambo and away they went to catch the plane with Massey's sister detailed to pick them up at Aberdeen.We went back to fishing.The next day Phyllis phoned me as they did not arrive at Aberdeen and everyone was worried about them.Later we discovered they arrived at the airport in Norway early.went for a PINT and missed their flight.
