This is the only 1822 item in our collection. Pieces for 1822 and 1842 are rare, as fine porcelain was only available to the rich few, and the cheaper mass produced pottery market had only just begun.
This mug is creamware and has the inscription "PRESTON GUILD In Commemoration of Preston Guild 1822 N. Grimshaw Mayor."
Interestingly, Mr Grimshaw is the only Mayor to have presided over two Guilds, 1822 and the earlier one of 1802.
Sadly just before the 1822 Guild his two sons drowned and the Guild was presided over by Mr Grimshaw's daughter in the role of Mayoress, rather than his wife who had presided with him (somewhat flamboyantly) at the 1802 Guild.
This mug and jug are pearlware, unmarked with pink lustre and green enamel decoration. They are marked "Preston Guild 1842."
Most Guild memorabilia has the name of the Mayor at the time of the Guild on it, and it is noteworthy that these pieces do not.
In 1842 Preston was growing as an industrial centre particularly with textiles, and with this came industrial unrest.
Before the 1842 Guild riots broke out. The Mayor, Samuel Horrocks, was heir to the founder of Lancashire's textile trade. He read out the Riot Act, but this was ignored and several rioters were killed and more injured when soldiers fired on them.
Although the subsequent Guild was well attended, it would hardly be surprising if he had chosen to keep a low profile and not be represented on Guild commemorative ware.
There is a sculpture at the site in Lune Street where the rioters were killed as a commemoration to them.
Every Guild seems to have had medals produced to commemorate it. They are relatively common for the later Guilds, but as with al the items rarer for older years.
The picture of this medal was kindly sent to us by another collector who has it in their collection. It depicts the Mayor and Mayoress Mr and Mrs Horrocks on one side and the Preston Guild crest on the other.
