The ozone layer protects us from the suns harmful ultra violet rays. These rays are responsible for making your skin burn and can cause skin cancer. Some of these rays can get through the ozone layer, but most are blocked. If too much UV light got through the ozone layer, life would struggle to survive on this planet.

The main problem is that over the years we have been using certain chemicals that can destroy this protective layer. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) are found in refridgerators, some aerosols and polystyrene foam. These chemicals are a main cause of the depletion of the ozone layer. In particular the ozone layer above Antartica and Australia have been particularly badly damaged. Photos from, www.star.ucl.ac.uk/~idh/solar/cap/sun/sun.htm images.tvnz.co.nz/news/environment
