Poland is a country that is 98% Catholic, so as you would expect, religion plays an important part in Polish life.

The town of Czestochowa has one of the most religious places in Poland. Jasna Gora , Sanctuary of the Mother of God, holds the "Black Madonna" icon.
The crowds of people, young and old, that fill the church each mass, shows the strong religious beliefs of Poland.

Jasna Gora and Czestochowa is certainly worth a visit. After visiting such a place, you get a feel for the total dedication that a large majority of Poles still have for their religion.

Probably the most famous Pole of all time is Pope John Paul II. Karol Jozef Wojtyla was born in Wadowice, near Krakow, on 18th May 1920... and the rest is history.

The church holds masses throughout the day, each one culminating in the uncovering of the Black Madonna, which is believed responsible for hundreds of miracles. Amongst the crowded congregation and the echoes of the sung prayers, look at the walls. They are covered from top to bottom in crutches, bandages, walking sticks, spectacles that have been left as proof of such miracles.
