Catalonian Tumblers

Dutch Standard Drawing by Jan Hatzman

Catalonian Flying Pigeons

The Catalonian Tumblers were at one time popular and widespread throughout Catalonia. The standard for this race is based on form, size and proportions and in their natural flying ability both individually and in kits. This is why they are included in the flying group. This standard says of the colouration that anything is possible as long as the colour is genetically stable. This is why it is described as the breed of a thousand colours. Some colourations were exclusive to individual breeders and varied from one loft to another. These colourations were divided into different groups according to the distribution of colour in the body ( Selfs, Piebalds, white-wings, Friar Caps etc…) and defined the variety according to the coloured part of the plumage or by similarity to something eg: Red Gold neck, Black white-tail, Blue bar piebald, etc…There are numerous possibilities. At present there are few varieties seen in exhibition and there are variations in size and form due to the disappearance of most of the flying pigeons during the dictatorship. The way forward now is to create consistency in the race and to obtain a good range of colours again. Within the Catalonian Flying Pigeons there were two distinct varieties; the Coll Pelat (Bare Neck) and the Cap i Bec (Head and Beak) which are rare.
