Sound: ra

Mnemonic: rah! - This is another picture of the angry man depicted in the hiragana symbol (perhaps drawn by a more stylistic artist). You can see his eye and open mouth.

Sound: ri

Mnemonic: reap - This is very similar to the hiragana symbol. It shows a scythe (left), which, as it now lacks a blade, is being used rather unsuccessfully to reap the corn.

Sound: ru

Mnemonic: run - This shows a pair of legs (making a run for it!)

Sound: re

Mnemonic: rent - Imagine some kind of depraved rented accommodation, where the landlord threatens you with his rusty scythe (shown here) if you don't pay up at the end of the month.

Sound: ro

Mnemonic: rock - This could simply be a picture of a big square block of stone. Alternatively, perhaps you could regard it as the open mouth of The Rock as he screams "If you smell... what The Rock is cookin'!"
