Hiragana Mnemonics Set 6

Sound: ha

Mnemonic: hammer - You've heard of a hammerhead shark. This is a hammer-tail shark. It is using its hammer to bang in a nail.

Sound: hi

Mnemonic: heal - This is a wound in a person's flesh seen in cross-section. It needs to be closed up in order to heal (a plaster might help).

Sound: fu

Mnemonic: fire - This one's easy, because it is the only instance of the letter f in hiragana. The symbol looks like a log fire. If you want a mnemonic for the pronounciation, remember that a fire gives off fumes.

Sound: he

Mnemonic: heh heh - A big strong guy (or a small strong guy, like Bruce Lee) bends an iron bar into this shape. He bends it with such ease that he chuckles to himself while doing so: "heh heh".

Sound: ho

Mnemonic: hot - Here is that exploding thermometer again. This is a closeup of the base of the thermometer; the bulb has burst because it is so hot. The two horizontal strokes are part of the scale printed on the thermometer. The curl in the bottom right is a shard of mangled glass.
