The first pic is my new project bike- an MZ ETZ300 which was made by the importers Wilf Green boring an ETZ250 Luxus out to 300cc & fitting a Mahle piston, changing the decals, fitting a 'heat disipator' to the cylinder head and a handlebar fairing. The last two items are missing from my bike- I should imagine the heat disipator was a nuisance when it came to changing the plug and as for the fairing it is in my loft as it is hideous. I acquired the bike from a fellow club member earlier this year for a very reasonable sum considering its in excellent mechanical order (though as you can see it is severely cosmetically challenged) and he has fitted electronic ignition and regulator. The second pic will be the finished result of the 'restoration' (so you will have to wait a while...). Having recently fallen off the thing and scuffed the front mudguard* I have started by painting that black- with Plasticote spraycan paint as this is what I found at the back of the garage, left over from doing the frame on the Saxon 500. This is a restoration being done following the true spirit of 'Zed Cred'; i.e. using low-tech canny bodgery at minimum cost; so I am using what materials I can lay my hands on cheaply. The tank and sidepanels will also be sprayed black, the frame is in very good condition so will only require a bit of touching up. The black painted alloy castings for switchgear, clamps, etc. will also be resprayed black- I have already painted one small casting with the plasticote, without primer, as a tester. The alloy wheelrims should polish up well judging from the test spot I applied Autosol to the other day. Things like a shiny exhaust and stainless downpipe and spokes will have to wait until funds become available. The bike rides well for a budget machine, being light and flickable- ideal for the backlanes where I live in Cornwall and would be great for cutting through town traffic, though it does lack power in highspeed situations such as motorways- top speed is about 85mph and cruises at about 70-80mph depending on rider determination. *First time I've fallen off a bike since about 1986. Various other bits damaged like handlebars, footrest, brake master cylinder & lever, headlamp, sundry indicators and mirrors- nearly all of these have been replaced on the cheap with second hand bits sourced from fellow club members.
