MZ NRX 500 Saxon Tour

This is a bike that I owned from 2000-2002 and grew to like a lot.
It was powered by a 4-stroke single Rotax engine which gave it more punch than an MZ 2-stroke and a bit more top speed- about 90mph as opposed to 85 mph.
Only faults developed were one break in the loom near the headstock, one deffective ignition suppressor unit, £15 (symptom for both= engine won't switch off!) and a sticky choke, eventually cured by replacing the cable with a lever directly on the carb- more reliable than a remote lever.
Fuel consumption was good at 60mpg which is 10 mpg more than I get out of ETZ300/301 2-strokes.
Finish quality was mixed- plastics very good, frame rather poor particularly around the bottom sections.
Theses bikes are pretty rare but never the less most of the running gear is the same as the ETZ251/301 so parts are cheap and repairs will be easy. The one bug-bear was the oil change which was complex and messy, but everything else was pretty straightforward.
The small fairing was useful without catching sidewinds and the narrow dimensions and highish bars and mirrors let you thread through traffic quite well.
Riding the bike in Cornwall I found it a good backlane scratcher, being light and flickable with useful torque to blat up the hills and fight headwinds. On dual carriageways it could keep up with the traffic in all conditions but not much more.
Best tyres I used were Continentals, with a 3,25-16 on the rear rather than a 3.50- believe me it works better. Most people recommend these or Pirellis.
