The North East is a passionate sporting region we have produced great sportspeople and clubs;

The Great North Run;
The Great North Run is a half marathon ran between Newcastle and South Shields every year and is now the biggest run of its kind in the world with nearly 50,000 entrants, runners representing every post code area of Great Britain take part.
In the race run on the 21st of September 2003 British athlete Paula Radcliffe won the women's race with a world record time of 65 minutes and 40seconds.
The race ran on the 18th September 2005 was the 25th anniversary of the event, and another world record was set in the men's race by African athlete Zersenay Tadesse with a time of 59 minutes and five seconds.

Gateshead used to be South Shields and were once a football league team.In fact Gateshead were only kicked out of the football league when teams from down south voted to replace them with Peterborough because that team were more acceptable because southern based teams didn't like traveling so far north to play games!

The region has top flight rugby union, the Newcastle Falcons,who started out as Gosforth-a succesful amatuer team- before changing their name to Newcastle Falcons when the sport turned professional.They now play at Kingston Park which is a purpose built rugby stadium on the outskirts of Newcastle.The stadium and training facilities are shared between Newcastle Falcons, Northumbria university and Northumberland rugby football union.
