The Gregory Cup has served a number of functions, but since 1973 has been awarded to the winners of division 2.
THE GREGORY CUP
PRESENTED TO THE
MID SUSSEX CHESS LEAGUE
BY
G. F. MOWATT ESQ
1934
When the Gregory Cup was first donated, the league consisted of a single division. It was used as the "second" trophy of the league, awarded to the best performance over 10 boards.
The name of the winner for 1938–9 does not appear on the cup. Evidently the outbreak of the Second World War disrupted the usual arrangements for engraving it.
From 1939 to 1967 The league did not operate. From 1955 the cup was used as a trophy for the SCCA annual jamboree.
When the league was reconstituted in 1967 the cup was returned, and until 1973 was awarded to the runners-up in the single-division league.
In 1973 the league was divided into two divisions, and thereafter the cup was awarded to the winners of division 2.
