ORIGIN OF THE NAME MATHER
This name has several origins depending on the country. In England it is an obsolete English word from the north of England meaning mower or reaper. In Scotland it is a form of Maider, common in Laurencekirk and neighbourhood, Kincardineshire, and may therefore be from the place name Mathers with the final -s dropped. There are many variations on this name including Madoure, Madour, Mador, Madowre, Maddyr, Mader, Maddir, Maider, Maydder, Medder, Madder (from Black). The very first record of the family name Mather is found in Kincardineshire, Scotland. The Mather family traces their ancestral roots back to Pictish origin, before the year 1100.

MATHER FAMILY
The earliest recorded Mather is John Mather who was born in Hamilton, Scotland in 1809. John attained the rank of Sergeant in the British Army and was a pensioner of the Chelsea Hospital. John served in the 79th Foot and 99th Foot Regiments. After leaving the army, John earned a living as a Grocer and Wine Merchant.
