Lufton is part of the Benefice of Odcombe, Brympton d'Evercy, Lufton and Montacute, four villages situated on the western edge of Yeovil.Montacute and Brympton both are renowed for their magnificent houses, Montacute being a National Trust property well-known to visitors, and Brympton, equally lovely, being privately owned and not open to the public. Both Montacute and Brympton Churches are open daily, and are both well worth exploring, containing much detail from the twelfth century onwards.
Odcombe and Lufton Churches were both almost totally re-built in the 1860s, but are equally loved and cared for by their congrgations. The key to Odcombe Church may be obtained from the Rectory, and that to Lufton from Red Brick Cottage, found just before you turn down the lane to the Church.
Montacute is the largest village in the Benefice, and is the largest church of the four. Lufton is the smallest in population, and the church can seat about thirty seven. Brympton has a huge new housing development in its parish, but is separated from this a distance of about a mile, and the church is situated down the long private drive which leads to Brympton House. Odcombe consists of two linked settlements, Higher Odcombe, where the church dominates the skyline to the west of Yeovil, and Lower Odcombe at the foot of the hill where the pub is situated!
