Memorials from Stapleton Church

In loving memory of Arthur FORSTER of Bankhead Bewcastle who died 24th March 1923 aged 94 years. Also of Jane beloved wife of the above who died 10th December 1922 aged 68 years. Also of George FORSTER who died 22nd March 1941 aged 58 years. Also of James Arthur FORSTER who died 8th November 1956 aged 75 years.

 

Sacred in memory of James FORSTER of Chapel House in the parish of Haltwhistle who died June 23rd 1880 aged 88 years. Also of Martha wife of James FOSTER who died at Chapel House March 29th 1867 aged 72 years. Also of Arthur their son who died April 15th 1827 aged 8 years. Also of Joseph their son who died Jan 1st 1856 aged 35 years. Also of Mary wife of Joseph who died June 24th 1857 aged 37 years. Also of Elizabeth their daughter who died at Bankhead August 6th 1900 aged 69 years. Also of John their son who died at Bankhead May 27th 1903 aged 85 years.

In memory of William GRAHAM of Nook died 16th November, 1810 aged 89. Also Elizabeth his wife died 2nd August, 1790 aged 55. Also Robert their son died 18th July, 1850 aged 92. Also Mary his wife died 22nd September, 1834 aged 65.

 

In memory of Margaret GRAHAM of Nook, parish of Nicholforest, who died 12th December, 1852 aged 80.

 

Here lies Jennet wife of Arthur GRAHAM of Sikehead who died 16th April, 1741 aged 76.

 

Tablestone under bush beside church: Here lies Reverend William GRAHAM late rector of this parish died 16th November, 1795 aged 70. Also his son William GRAHAM, surgeon, died at Backgate 2nd August, 1799 aged 21. Likewise Mrs. Mary GRAHAM, relict of above Rev. William GRAHAM died Backgate 13th April, 1816 aged 79.

 

In memory of David GRAHAM of Casehouse died 29th April, 1794 aged 75. Also Margaret his wife died 9th August, 1784 aged 60. Mary their daughter died 4th September, 1744 aged 13.

 

In memory of Mary, wife of John GRAHAM, died Burnfoot, Bewcastle 17th September, 1853 aged 57. Also said John GRAHAM, died Highstonepark 30th October, 1859 aged 62.

 

Here lies Jane wife to Arthur GRAHAM of Crakthrod died 18th May, 1783 aged 59. Also their son William, died 5th May, 1783 aged 29 of Courtholm.

 

Erected in memory of James GRAHAM who died at Halton 19th April, 1835 aged 74. Also Margaret his wife died 15th April, 1842 aged 73. Also James GRAHAM, their son, died at Treehouse near Brampton, 21st March, 1849 aged 44.

 

Here lies James, son to Francis GRAHAM of Flosh House died 5th December, 1779 aged 20. Also Elizabeth his daughter died 3rd March, 1799 aged 22.

 

Here lies Janey GRAHAM, only daughter of John and Gracey GRAHAM. Born Saughtrees, Bewcastle 8th November, 1751.

 

Erected in memory of Elizabeth, wife of William GRAHAM of Lineholm died 21st April, 1816 aged 59. Also above William GRAHAM died 2nd December, 1836 aged 82.

 

Erected in Memory of Mary, wife of Thomas MITCHISON who a’died at Stubb, in the Parish of Bewcastle, Janry. 20th 1851, aged 53 years. Also of the above Thomas MITCHINSON who died at Stubb March 6th 1865 aged 75 years.

 

In Memory of Walter son of Joseph and Jane MITCHINSON who died at Scotchtown Janry. 19, 1849, aged 5 years. Also of Sarah their daughter who died Jany. 23 1849, aged 4 years. Also of Joseph their son who died Feby. 2, 1849, aged 2 years. Also of Mary Elizabeth their daughter and wife of Robert BEATY who died at Lamperts, August 8th 1878 aged 27 years. Also of the above Joseph MITCHINSON who died at Kirkbeckstown June 1st 1883, aged 73 years.

 

Erected in Memory of Walter, son of Frances [sic] and Elizabeth MITCHINSON of Fellend who died Decr. 27: 1833, aged 20 years. Also Francis their grandson who died January 23rd. 1838 aged 7 years. Also of the above Francis MITCHINSON who died April 10th 1846, aged 78 years. Also Elizabeth his wife who died July 4th 1859, aged 90 years. Also of Richard their son who died May 1st 1876 aged 82 years. Also of Jane their daughter who died December 5th 1890 aged 75 years. Also of Isabella daughter of the above Richard MITCHINSON, who died February 23rd 1891, aged 69 years. Also of John MITCHINSON their son who died May 1st 1895 aged 96 years.

 

In Affectionate Remembrance of Francis MITCHINSON, who died at Hether Grove June 26th 1874, aged 72 years. Also of Ann his wife, who died at Old-Town, October 24th 1890, aged 74 years. Also of Elizabeth their daughter, who died at Newtown of Irthington, April 13th 1880, aged 22 years.

 

Erected in Memory of Robert MITCHINSON who died at Lowhouse Parish of Bewcastle March 23rd 1857 aged 52 years. Also of Ann MITCHINSON, widow of the above, who died at Newby in the Parish of Irthington, December 7th 1893, aged 85 years. Also of Walter Robert their son, and dearly beloved husband of Mary MITCHINSON, who died June 21st 1910 aged 58 years.

In loving Memory of William MITCHELSON who died at Allergarth Roweltown, 3rd. Octr. 1928 aged 88 years. Also of Mary Ann his wife who died 1st. April 1928 aged 75 years. Also of their daughter Lillie Ada who died 21st. January 1962 aged 70 years.

 

In Memory of David MITCHINSON who died at Scotch Arms Inn Brampton, Feby. 7 1853, aged 34 years. Also of Mary his daughter, who died October 13th 1847 [recut?] aged 12[?] years. [should be aged 3 years] Also Margaret wife of the above who died at Long Park, March 19th 1908, aged 81 years. Also of Thomas LITTLE son in law of the above who died at Millholme Stapleton February 2nd. 1882 aged 43 years. Also of Jane Mitchinson, daughter of Margaret Goodfellow, eldest daughter of Thomas and Jane LITTLE, who died at Longpark March 18th 1897, aged 28 years.

[Note: Jane Mitchinson and Margaret Goodfellow were both daughters of Thomas & Jane LITTLE; Jane Mitchinson died in infancy, and the death in 1897 is likely to be Margaret Goodfellow’s.]

Also of Jane, wife of the above Thomas LITTLE, who died at Longpark Scaleby, July 5th 1917, aged 69 years.

 

In Memory of Thomas MITCHINSON of Brampton, who died Augt. 12th. 1876 aged 66 years. Also of Mary his wife, who died Sepr. 26th. 1867 aged 61 years. Also of Robert their son, who died Novr. 17th. 1874, aged 31 years.

 

Be ye also ready ye know not when the Lord cometh. In Memory of John MITCHINSON of Trough, who departed this life July 18th. 1865, aged 39 years. Also Martha widow of the above who died at Cumcrook Feby. 23rd. 1904, aged 75 years. Also of Margaret daughter of the above who died December 31st. 1938 aged 84 years.

 

In loving Memory of John MITCHINSON of Cumcrook, who died 25 April 1914, aged 53 years. Also of Thomas MITCHINSON brother of the above who died 31 May 1914, aged 52 years. Also of William MITCHINSON, brother of the above, who died 21 July 1937, aged 80 years.

 

Erected in Memory of William MITCHISON of Trough who died June 21st 1830 aged 28 years. Also of Robert MITCHISON father of the above who died May 5th. 1848, aged 70 years. Also of Ann daughter of Robert MITCHISON who died at Trough March 9th. 1850 aged 26 years. Also of Mary wife of the above Robert MITCHISON who died November 28th. 1853, aged 74 years. Also of Mary their daughter who died at Kirkcambeck, Feby. 18th. 1879, aged 72 years.

Note: from the Carlisle Journal June 26th 1830

On Sunday last, as Mr William Mitchinson of Trough in the parish of Stapleton, was riding a bay mare near Scaleby, the mare stumbled and fell, throwing Mr Mitchinson upon the road with such force that he received a severe fracture on the skull, and other bruises. He lingered in great agony until the following day, when he expired. Verdict - accidental death.

 

In Memory of William LITTLE, who died at Kirkcambeck, June 7th. 1868, aged 63 years. Also of Abigail wife of the above, who died at Kirkcambeck, October 15th 1882, aged 68 years. Also of Mary MITCHINSON, sister of the above Abigail, who died at Kirkcambeck, Feby. 18th 1879 aged 72 years. Also of Archibald their son who died at Sorbietrees, May 20th 1901, aged 54 years.

 

In loving Memory of John George dearly loved husband of Margaret MITCHELSON of Howard House, Hethersgill who died 9th. November 1961 aged 74 years. Also Margaret dearly loved wife of the above who died 16th. November 1961 aged 80 years.

 

Memoriae Sacrum of Sarah Wife of William SHORTRIDGE of Mossedge Who diedMay the 23rd 1821 Aged 44 years. Also of Mary their Daughter who died June 4th 1825 ages 20 years*. Also Rachel their daughter who died at Mossedge Octr 12th 1829 aged 15 Years. Also the above William SHORTRIDGE who died April 4 1866 aged 98 years.

Carlisle Patriot 11th June 1825

Last Saturday a young woman, the daughter of a labourer of the name of Shortrigg, who resides at Moss Edge in Kirklinton, was unfortunately drowned in attempting to cross the river Lyne at a place called Spirling Holme. On Tuesday an inquest was held on the body before R Lowry Esq. Verdict: Accidental death
