Carlisle Patriot February 6th 1880
Death of a Noted Wrestler

One of our celebrated heavy weight wrestlers, Richard Wright, familiarly known as Dick Wright, died at his residence, the Sun Inn, Wath Brown, Whitehaven on Tuesday. For nearly twenty years Dick had but one or two equals, and none superior in the ring. He was a native of Longtown where he learned the joinery trade. When quite a raw youth he figured conspicuously in the light weight competitions in the district, notably at Annan, and for a few years he won a number of belts in the eleven stone. In 1853 we found he ran into third place in the all weights at Carlisle Race meeting, second in the light weights at Longtown and second for the eleven stone prize at Talkin Tarn. The year following - 1855 - Wright began his career as a crack heavy weight wrestler, winning the all weight prizes at Carlisle Races, beating in the finals William Hawksworth of Shap, and in the sports at the Green Dragon, Carlisle, a few weeks after, he was victorious, his greatest opponent being Ben Cooper. He figured conspicuously for several years felling most of the champions of his day. William Jameson of Penrith gradually worked his way alongside Dick and his compeers, and in 1859 a match for the championship of the Carlisle wrestling ring took place between Wright and Jameson at Mr Hall's Bowling Green in Botchergate. The contest ended in Dick throwing the Penrith man, then young at the business, three times in succession. During the next ten or a dozen years, these two wrestlers frequently met, sometimes one and sometimes the other being victorious, but as Jameson's prowess developed itself he began to have the best of the struggles. In 1860 at Galashiels Jameson beat Dick; at Fauld's Brown the result was reversed; at Jedburgh Jameson was defeated and at Talkin Tarn Dick was thrown. We need not particularise each tussle these two had. At Carlisle Races in 1862 Jameson was a good second to Wright; the following year they were "blown out" in the third round for not getting hold in time. Dick won the Carlisle prize for all weights seven times, twice in succession in 1866 and 1867. In 1872 he was thrown in the finals by George Steadman. In 1874 he met Allison of Weardale in the finals and having an easy win, he announced his intention of retiring from the wrestling ring. His collection of prizes comprised nineteen silver cups, twenty eight belts, some of them very handsome and valuable; thirteen silver stars, three silver medals and a gold watch. Dick was never more than fourteen stone weight and therefore had some disadvantage in meeting some of the more bulky of his opponents. In October 1872 he left Longtown and took up his residence at Wath Brow. Dropsy accelerated by inflammation was the cause of death. He was 48 years of age.
