These are arranged in alphabetical order: I have kept Gilchrist's original numbering which is an indication of the position of the gravestone. Those without numbers are not in Gilchrist's document, and have been recorded by myself unless stated otherwise

 

38) In memory of Sibil, wife of William McFADEN, who died at Blackbank 21st September 1854 aged 51. And William their son who died at Longtown 9th July 1837 aged 2 years and 6 months. And above William McFADEN who died 30th April 1869 aged 81. Post 1855 inscriptions.

 

 

In memory of John BELL of Carwhinlay who died July 14th 1895 aged 81 years. Joan McVEAN his wife who died February 5th 1900 aged 82 years. Also Anne daughter of the above who died February 19th 1857 aged 1 year and 8 months. Also Jeannie daughter of the above who died at Thornhill Dumfriesshire 11th June 19-- aged 73 years.

 

 

195) In memory of Francis, son of Thomas and Elizabeth MCVETTIE who died at Bogburn 19th November 1836 aged 2. And Robert their son who died 23rd November 1836 aged 4. And above Elizabeth who died 2nd December 1839.

 

 

 

148) In memory of Jane COLT of Browhead who died 11th May 1785 aged 45. And David FERGUSON her son killed in a gravel pit near Brantwith North Britain 26th December 1787 aged 21.

(reverse): In memory of Andrew McVITTIE of Browhead who died 20th May 1810 aged 62.

 

 

 

23) In memory of John MCVITTIE of Longtown who died 23rd February 1811 aged 68. And Margaret his wife who died 21st January 1820 aged 79. And Jane his daughter who died 20th February 1791 aged 21. And John their son who died 5th March 1824 aged 53. And Ann his daughter who died 26th July 1831 aged 43.

Reverse: In Memory of John [...] who died 2- January 1768 aged 67. And Jane his wife who died 30th September 1786 aged 80.

 

Note: this latter inscription is recorded by Gilchrist as being the memorial to a John McVittie and his wife. However the surname on the stone has flaked off completely.

Checking the parish register, the dates match the burials of John Forster and his wife Jane White. John Forster was uncle to John McVittie, whose memorial is recorded on the other side of the stone. John McVitties parents were John McVittie and his wife Mary Forster.

 

Note: from the Carlisle Journal March 13th 1824 On the 5th inst at the Crown Inn, Botchergate in this city, Mr John M’Vitie of Longtown, aged 53.

 

26) In memory of Archibald MARR of Longtown died 4th March 1813 aged 72. And Sibyl his wife who died May 1810 aged 68. And Jane their daughter who died 24th January 1830 aged 56. And James their son late member of Holy Temple Lodge who died at Longtown 27th August 1834 aged 51.

(reverse) To the memory of [...] wife of Archibald MARR, Longtown, who died 17th [...] 1768 aged 24. (Stone badly weathered)

Note: from the Carlisle Patriot September 6th 1834
Inquest at Longtown on the 28th ult, on the body of James Marrs, aged 49, who a few days before fell from the loft at the brewery there down a flight of steps, and received a concussion of the brain and other injuries.

Verdict - accidental death.

30) In memory of James MARRS of Browhead who died 22nd November 1792 aged 33. And Bridget his wife who died at Longtown 25th July 1815 aged 66. And James their son who died 27th March 1845 aged 59. And John, son of James and Sibella MARS who died 26th January 1829 in infancy. And above Sibella MARS who died 17th April 1860 aged 70. Post 1855 inscriptions on reverse.

 

 

31) In memory of Bridget daughter of John and Mary MARRS of Longtown who died 3rd January 1812 aged 2. And above Mary MARRS who died 24th April 1835 aged 50. And above John MARRS who died 10th September 1855 aged 72. Post 1855 inscriptions on reverse.

And above Charles MITCHELL who died at Arthurseat 14th January 1860 aged 77. And Margaret MITCHELL his wife who died at Arthurseat 1st August 1860 aged 53.

 

 

112) In memory of Matthew MITCHELL of Nookfoot who died 1st October 1808 aged 82. And Elizabeth his wife who died at Nookfoot 25th March 1815 aged 76. And Matthew his son who died at Stoneygate 11th January 1836 aged 65. And Jane his wife who died 11th June 1843 aged 64.

A few days ago, aged 80 years, Mr Matthew Mitchell of Nook-foot in this county, and colliery agent to Sir James Graham Bart. His death was occasioned by the overturning of a cart.

(reverse): Archibald FARISH late of Riddings who died at Langholm July 28th 1905 aged 74 years. Also Thomas his son who died in infancy. Also Catherine MITCHELHILL his wife who died at Tail Canonbie on July 19th 1922 aged 86 years. Also Catherine their daughter who died at Langholm October 17th 1919 aged 44 years. Interred at Langholm Cemetery.

118) In memory of John NAPIER shoemaker of Longtown who died 5th November 1830 aged 38. And Charles his son who died 29th February 1820 aged 14 months. And Sibella his wife who died 5th April 1872 aged 79. Post 1855 inscriptons.

(reverse): In memory of William NAPIER of Longtown who died 16th December 1817 aged 83. And Margaret his wife who died 22nd February 1800 aged 48. William, David and William who died in infancy. James their son who died at London 21st November 1799 aged 27. James their son who died 12th April 1801 aged 17 months. Ann their daughter who died 5th June 1802 aged 24. Charles their son who died 8th September 1805 aged 23.

At Longtown, on Saturday last the 22nd Inst. William Napier aged 83 years. He was a native of Dumfries, but had resided at Longtown upward of 40 years. He was uncle to John Napier Esq. of Castle Douglas, and father to William Napier, the young man we noticed some time ago as behaving so gallantly in taking a French officer at the battle of Waterloo.

Also Rev John NICHOL 44 years curate of this parish who died 16th October 1826 aged 69. Also Mary wife of Rev John NICHOL and neice of above John and Mary SCRYMSOUR who died 25th May 1811 aged 31. Also Anthony NICHOL their son who died at Isel 11th April 1831 aged 35. Also John Scrymsour, eldest son of above Anthony NICHOL who died in Australia 22nd June 1859 aged 25.

 

Note: from the Carlisle Patriot October 28th 1826 On Monday last, at Kirkandrews on Esk, in his 70th year, after a few days illness, the Rev. Mr Nichol, of which parish he had been curate for 44 years -first under the Rev. Dr. James, secondly under his son the Rev. John James, and for the last 36 years of his life, under the present incumbent, the Rev. Fergus Graham, rector of Arthuret and Kirkandrews on Esk, during all of which protracted period Mr Nichol ever conducted himself with such serenity of manners and unaffected piety as to not only endear himself to the flock he had the oversight of, but to all those who were particularly acquainted with him and with whom his memory will long be held in pleasing remembrance

 

From the Carlisle Patriot April 13th 1839 At Linshall-field, near Isell, on Thursday last, aged 36, Mr Anthony Nichol, second son of the late Rev Mr Nichol of Kirkandrews on Esk, much respected.

Erected in memory of Isabella daughter of Robert and Jane NICHOL who died at Riddinghill Cottage 6th October 1907 aged 1 year and 4 months.

 

 

167) In memory of John, son of John and Mary OLIVER who died at Scotchdyke 23rd July 1816 aged 2. And James their son who died 8th August 1824 aged 12. And above John OLIVER who died 25th May 1840 aged 71. And Mary his wife who died 9th December 1838 aged 68.

On Monday last, an inquest was taken at Dykeside, parish of Kirkandrews on Esk, on view of the body of James Oliver, aged 13, who on the preceding day, while ascending from a well, fell from the ladder to a depth of 14 feet, by which he died instantly.
