Memorials of Kirkandrews on Esk The memorials of Kirkandrews upon Esk were recorded in 1973 by George Gilchrist as part of a series recorded in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, from a survey by Alex McCracken and Arthur Tolson. They were printed with a cover design, map and illustrations by R.A. Shannon, and with historial notes by E.G. Faulder and Alex McCracken. I have transcribed Gilchrist's work, which forms the main part of these pages; however Gilchrist only recorded the inscriptions up to 1855, leaving a large number of stones and inscriptions unrecorded. Where the inscriptions state "Post 1855 Inscriptons" it is an indication that there are further inscriptions not recorded by Gilchrist. Where I have any relevant obituaries these are included underneath the inscription. The full inscriptions from Kirkandrews on Esk have recently been recorded and are available from the Dumfries and Galloway Family History Society. The book includes all the fallen gravestones (including some pre 1855 ones not previously recorded), all the post 1855 inscriptions, and a plan of the churchyard to help you find any particular gravestone. Many of the stones are badly weathered and covered with lichens: consequently many of the details are impossible to record accurately - the dates on these should be taken with caution! Heraldic illustrations and map are by R. A. Shannon, reproduced with kind permission from Sheila Shannon of Dumfries. Many thanks to the Friends of Annandale and Eskdale Museums who hold the copyright on Gilchrist's transcript for permission to put this online.
If you want a photograph of any particular gravestone, William Bundred of Cumberland Ancestor Trackers helped to record all the inscriptions, and can photograph any gravestone for you for a small fee.
