The deceased served as assistant surgeon on board the Ajax at the Battle of Trafalgar. He was also on board one of the ships under Admiral Duckworth, when she blew up in the passage of the Dardanelles. Rev Richard BATY was the son of William BATY of Hoodshill and his wife Jane. He married Elizabeth RAE in Jun 1727 at Cumwhitton.. He became curate of Kirkandrews on Esk in 1725 and then, in succession to Edward WILTSHIRE and William TORFORD, in 1732 became Rector. More information about his incumbency and his writings are to be found in the 'Transactions of the Cumberland & Westmoreland Antiquarian and Archæological Society' viii, p280-306, in an article by Richard Saul Ferguson entitled 'The Registers of Kirkandrews upon Esk'.
