At Longtown on the 30th ult, after a long and tedious illness, borne with Christian fortitude and resignation, Jane, wife of Mr Robert Armstrong, schoolmaster, aged 57 - much and deservedly respected.

At Gilnockie Cottage, Cannonbie on the 23rd ult, aged 63, Lancelot Armstrong Esq. surgeon of the Royal Navy and late of the Naval Hospital at the Cape of Good Hope. The deceased served as assistant surgeon on board the Ajax at the Battle of Trafalgar. He was also on board one of the ships under Admiral Duckworth, when she blew up in the passage of the Dardanelles. He lost the whole of his clothes etc and saved his life by swimming.

On the 22nd of January last, on his passage home from New Orleans, Captain Francis Armstrong, of the Amelia of Liverpool, in the 37th year of his age. He was the eldest son of Mr John Armstrong of Dykeside near Longtown.

At Longtown on the 29th ultimo, Mr James Atkinson, aged 51, for many years one of Sir James Graham’s ploughmen. The deceased was struck severely by rheumatism a few years ago, and confined to his bed, but was still in receipt of his wages.

NOTE by John Ferguson: John BATY drowned whilst bathing in the River Esk in 1777, aged 34 years. Rev Richard BATY was the son of William BATY of Hoodshill and his wife Jane. He married Elizabeth RAE in Jun 1727 at Cumwhitton.. He became curate of Kirkandrews on Esk in 1725 and then, in succession to Edward WILTSHIRE and William TORFORD, in 1732 became Rector.
More information about his incumbency and his writings are to be found in the 'Transactions of the Cumberland & Westmoreland Antiquarian and Archæological Society' viii, p280-306, in an article by Richard Saul Ferguson entitled 'The Registers of Kirkandrews upon Esk'. He was a friend of the diarist the Rev George WILLIAMSON of Arthuret who officiated there between 1742 and 1747.

At Longtown, on Friday 2nd Inst. Mr Thomas Bell, in the 83rd year of his age, who taught upward of 60 years, with great success, the various branches of mathematical and commercial learning. His talents and assiduity were such that his numerous pupils, some of whom fill very important stations in various parts of the world, will ever revere his memory and which, for his exemplary deportment throughout life, will long be cherished by all who knew him.
