In Saturday last, Mrs Jane Shore was found dead in bed, having been in the enjoyment of tolerably good health the previous evening. The deceased was 62 years of age and resided in the porters lodge at Netherby. Inquest verdict - natural death.

February 17th 1843 Death of a Veteran
At the Porter’s Lodge, Netherby, on the 7th inst, died Mr James Shore, aged 70. The deceased had served in the 52nd regiment of foot, for a period of 23 years, with which he was present at most of the leading engagements in the Peninsular Campaign, in one of which, in Portugal, he had the honour of saving the life of his Captain (Mein) and subsequently became entitled to wear the Waterloo medal. The deceased was highly respected by Colonel Napier, who had been known to go six miles out of his road to visit him.Old Shore was remarkable for the kindliness of his nature, and proved it by the protection he offered to a helpless Portuguese boy, who followed the army for some weeks. Shore took him under his care until he was old enough to beat the triangle, and it is gratifying to be able to say that he afterwards became a steady soldier, and obtained his discharge with a pension so lately as 3 or 4 years ago, when the 52nd were stationed in Carlisle.
