Carlisle Patriot May 11th 1833
At Longtown on the 2nd inst. Robert M’Adam Esq. surgeon, aged 70. A man who with the first rate professional abilities, possessed a kindness of heart and purity of religious principle seldom equalled, and whilst his memory will be long revered by all classes, the poor, to whom he was always a kind and cheerful friend and to many of whom he devoted much of his time, without hope of fee or reward, will long sincerely mourn his death. He had practiced 45 years in Longtown.

The Carlisle Journal added:He was the medical attendant of the Netherby family and had practised for the period of 45 years in Longtown. His remains were interred by desire of the Rev W Graham near to the spot which it is generally believed that gentleman had selected for his own remains (in preference to the inside of the church) in Arthuret churchyard...As proof of the respect in which the deceased was held in the neighbourhood a few years ago the farmers of Kirkandrews and Arthuret presented him with a handsome silver snuff box, on which was sketched the pony on which he rode, with an appropriate inscription. His corpse was followed to the grave by a large and respectable part of the neighbourhood, the crowded streets bearing ample testimony to the sorrow with which they viewed his final departure from among them.
