Melancholy Fatality - Fall over Etterby Scaur
We regret to have to announce that late Friday night, Mr Samuel Irving, a well known retired professional man, fell over Etterby Scaur into the river Eden, where he was drowned. Mr Irving, who lived in Stanwix, and was 71 years of age, left home on Friday afternoon going along the Scaur and down the Rockcliff road as far as the Chapel House Inn (Mr Ellwoods). There he sat, drinking whiskey, until about half past nine at night, when the landlord set him on his road homeward beyond the railway crossing. The landlord said he had only three glasses of whiskey and that he could walk steadily. It will be recollected that the night was black and stormy and in the darkness the old gentleman seems to have lost his way, because an hour and a half later, he knocked up the gatekeeper at Kingmoor Railway Crossing and told him he had lost his hat. The keeper (James Johnstone) lent him an old cap to go home in, and that was the last occasion Mr Irving was seen alive, about a quarter past eleven. He had a dog with him, and at two in the morning the dog arrived home, a circumstance which caused serious apprehension. A search was instigated, when the dead body of the unfortunate gentleman was found in the Eden by Mr Fish of the Crown Inn, Stanwix.
It was evident, both from his position and from marks on the upper foot path, that he had fallen over the scaur almost opposite the house called Castle View, midway between Edentown and Ann’s Hill... his watch had stopped at five minutes to two o’clock. At the inquest (when a verdict of “accidentally drowned” was returned) strong expressions were used regarding the exposed state of the Scaur. Mr Irving was for many years cashier in the office of Mr Nanson, Town Clerk, a situation which he resigned some years ago with a competency.

Portrait painter in oil. He was probably born in Longtown, his earliest recorded work being his portrait in 1818 of David Lang, the so-called "priest" at Gretna in Dumfriesshire. He exhibited four portraits at the Carlisle Academy in 1824, giving addresses in Longtown and London, so may have moved to the capital about this date. Conflicting reports as to the quality of his work appeared in the local press of his day: one paper said it was "outrageously coloured" while another described it as the product of "considerable ability." A LONGTOWN MAN KILLED AT FALKIRK
On Saturday night about 12 o'clock, a railway smash occurred at the High Station, Falkirk, Stirlingshire, whereby the guard, Thomas Jeffrey, Springburn Road ,Glasgow, lost his life.It appears that a train of empty carriages was standing near the station while the engine was taking in water, when a goods train from Berwick to Glasgow dashed out of a tunnel at the rear of the stationary train, killing Jeffrey instantaneously. The driver and fireman of the Berwick train had a marvellous escape.Jeffrey was 28 years of age and was a native of Longtown.

More Accidents on the Border Union Railway
At the Thistle Bridge in course of erection over the river Esk near Scotchdyke. On Friday last as RT Leddicoat, son of Mr Leddicoat who has the putting up and fixing the malleable iron girders (which are about 10 tons each) on several bridges along the Border Union Railway, was engaged with others in lowering one of them into its place, it fell over unexpectedly upon the young man and nearly cut him in two. He was scarcely seen to breathe. His body was got out from beneath the ponderous weight as soon as possible: it was a most painful sight to contemplate. An inquest was held on Saturday before W Carrick Esq, coroner, and a verdict of accidental death returned. He was only 20 years of age.
