We understand from what we are able to learn of the sad event, that while his celebrated pony Liddels Strength was running for and winning the last race, Mr Graham had incautiously and in the excitement of the moment, stepped into the inside of the course, close to the winning chair, and while stooping down to see his favourite win, he was knocked down and rode over by one of the other running horses. He was immediately raised and every possible assistance rendered, but the unfortunate gentleman was insensible, and was found to be much bruised about the head and other parts of the body. Medical assistance was obtained as quickly as possible, and every remedy that could be tried was adopted without success, and Mr Graham expired on the 9th inst. He was buried in Arthuret Churchyard on Saturday last, attended to the grave by a large circle of relatives, friends and acquaintances. Note: from the Carlisle Patriot November 2nd 1861 Death of Sir James Graham Sir James Graham died at Netherby shortly before noon yesterday. For the past 18 months he had been suffering from attacks of acute pain in the heart on the least extra mental or physical exertion. On Thursday week, having dined with his family as usual on the previous day, he was seized with pain of more than usual severity in the heart. Remedies were applied: the attack yielded to their influence and he gradually improved. Last Thursday he was so much better that he told his medical attendant he thought he should shortly be able to dispense with his service, and after having dinner in his bedroom, he retired to bed about 6 o'clock, saying he felt all the better for having sat up longer than usual. Soon after that he had another attack of acute pain, which did not yield to the remedies applied. He expressed a strong conviction that it was useless to try any more remedies, as he was quite sure from the long continuance of spasms and from his general feeling, that the end was at hand. He then gradually sank during the night, and died at a quarter before twelve yesterday. His faculties were bright and unimpaired to the last, and he died expressing the utmost resignation.
