This web site is a collection of obituaries, marriage notices, crime reports, inquest reports and other news, all about Longtown and its neighbourhood.

The two newspapers they are taken from are

The Carlisle Journal
Founded as a Whig paper in 1798 by Francis Jollie, holdings date from 1802

The Carlisle Patriot
Founded as a Tory paper by B Scott in 1815. It had a smaller circulation than the Journal, but is well worth a read.

Details about these and other Cumbrian newspapers can be found at the Carlisle Libraries site: there is a PDF file you can download which has complete details of holdings of the newspapers, including at the National Newspaper Library at Colindale.

I viewed the Carlisle Journal at Carlisle Record Office, and the Carlisle Patriot on microfilm at Whitehaven Record Office. Both newspapers are held on microfilm at Carlisle Library. Copies of any article can be made there for a small fee.

Thanks to the staff of both Record Offices and of Carlisle Library for their help and advice - and patience!

The modern newspapers of Cumbria are equally entertaining, and hopefully a valuable resource for future historians. Try the Cumberland News for some up-to-date news from Longtown.

If you want to check any of the articles for yourself, check opening times and availability before travelling - at Carlisle Library, it is possible to reserve a microfilm viewer in advance, which is a good idea if you are travelling a long way.
