Governor of the Poor Wanted

The parish of Arthuret want a proper person to undertake the superintendence of the Poor, to relieve them, to keep the parish accounts, and to do every part of the overseers duty, except the collection of the Poor Rates.

Mr Ellis, Bush Farm near Longtown, will give further information to all applicants.

Wanted at the Tile Kiln at Sandysike Toll Bar, near Longtown, a CONTRACTOR for preparing the clay and manufacturing such draining tiles and building bricks as shall be required for use of the Estate at Netherby...

To Schoolmasters

Wanted, a steady and respectable person to teach in the school house lately erected at Blackford in the parish of Kirklinton.

Application to be made to the Rev. T Pattinson of Kirklinton, or to Mr Baty, Blackford, until the 9th day of July, when an examination and election will take place. Respectable references as to character will be required.

CONSTABLE WANTED

The Arthuret and Kirkandrews Association are in immediate want of a proper person to act as CONSTABLE to the Association. The person preferred to the office must be properly qualified and well recommended for sobriety, steadiness and attention, and he must reside in Longtown...

To Household Servants

Wanted about the 18th July, a dairy maid, to take the management of the dairy department, and also the making and baking of various sorts of bread for a Gentleman's family.

To a person properly qualified( and no other need apply) this will be found a desirable situation. Wanted also at the same time, an active, cleanly Kitchen Maid, accustomed to a large family.

Apply to Mrs Drummond, housekeeper, at Netherby by Longtown, or to Mrs Hornsby, confectioner, Carlisle.

To Labourers

Wanted Immediately, from 4 to 6 good workmen, to work in the young woods of Netherby for about six months. If accustomed to thinning, so much the better.

Persons of good character may apply to Mr Yule of Fergushill, or to Mr Campbell, wood warden of Netherby, by Longtown.

To Bobbin Makers

The proprietor of the Estate of Netherby in Cumberland, is desirous of establishing a bobbin manufactory, for working up the wood suitable for the purpose, produced in his extensive woods and plantations, and he is willing to give away every reasonable encouragement to a contractor having adequate means and enterprise for the undertaking.

The situation proposed for the establishment is near to the market town of Longtown, about 11 miles from the city of Carlisle and 12 from the port of Annan, from which places there is every facility of Export by the railways, and by Steam Navigation. The roads in every direction are excellent.

Wanted at Middlefoot Tile Works in the parish of Stapleton, 2 or 3 good moulders, who understand the business in general.

September 2nd 1837 CJ

LONGTOWN UNION

Wanted, a treasurer for the above union, and a medical officer for the parishes of Arthuret and Kirkandrews upon Esk.

The Board of Guardians will require the Treasurer to give security for £700. He will have the use of all Monies in his hands, but no salary. The applicants for Medical Officer must give in their tenders per case for Medicine and Attendance on each pauper, but the whole sum not to exceed £33 per annum.

To Carpenters

Wanted, 40 Bedsteads for the Longtown Union Workhouse, made of the finest Memel Timber, with wood or cord and ticking bottoms of the following dimensions:

6 ft long 3 ft 10 in wide, on four posts, 2 ft 7 in and 2 ft 1 in high.

The frames and posts to be 4 in by 3 in, the bottoms to be made out of deals 3/4 in thick, or of the best cord and ticking.

To have inch headboards, 12 in wide, also proper iron work.

Separate tenders for each type of bottom are required to be delivered to the Clerk of the Board of Guardians, at the Grahams Arms Inn, Longtown, on or before 12 o'clock on Monday 30th October.

 

 

December 22nd 1838 CP

The Board of Guardians of the Longtown Union will on Monday 24th instant receive tenders from Persons willing to contract for the making and fixing of six pairs of looms, at the Workhouse at Hallburn, where tenders are to be delivered free of expense.

Wanted immediately, a MILLER, at Solport Mill, a single man of steady habits that thoroughly understands millering in all its branches. Application to be made to John Blair of Solport Mill. One that has been used with country work will be preferred.
