19th CENTURY LONGTOWN From the Pages of the Carlisle Journal and Carlisle Patriot Newspapers |
| |||||
Longtown is a small market town in Cumbria, England, near to the Scottish Border. Unlike many towns, which grew from smaller villages or settlements, Longtown was planned and built in the late 18th century, by the local landowners, the Grahams of Netherby. This is a website about 19th century Longtown, taken from contemporary newspapers As in all newspapers, the information is not always accurate, and frequently very biased, but gives us some fascinating details about life then. Most of the information is the sort of trivia we enjoy in today's local papers - who's got married, which houses are for sale, who's gone bankrupt, and who has been up before the magistrates for being drunk and disorderly... I have tried to transcribe the newspapers reports as accurately as possible, but I have edited many of the longer articles; if you are interested in any article, you should look up the full report yourself. Entries are arranged according to subject and then chronologically. Sorry, I haven't a search facility yet. For some recent photos of the Longtown area, I have some in my photo album. My other website is Memorial Inscriptions from Longtown - a collection of inscriptions from churchyards round Longtown, including a transcript of Gilchrist's "Memorials of Kirkandrews on Esk".
