William Carr

Returns his grateful acknowledgments to his Friends and the Public for the Generous Contributions towards indemnifying him for the loss he sustained by the burning of his MILL at Westlinton... At the same time, having been called upon by some of those who had the misfortune to suffer along with him, for payment of their losses, he hath to inform them that he is ready to give them a proportionate share of the money which has been collected for his benefit, amounting to between 80 and 90 pounds sterling...

And for that purpose has appointed Thursday 14th day of June at the House of James Twaddle, innkeeper, Longtown, between the hours of 10 and 4, where he will meet them to settle the business.

(The mill at Westlinton burned down in December 1809).

Virginia Tar, Grease Butter and Palm Oil.

Walter Armstrong has for sale at Newcastleton and at Mr William Tweddle's, Longtown, an excellent stock of best Virginia Tar, best Grease Butter and Palm Oil - orders from the country punctually attended to.

 

 

February 27th 1813  CJ

The Rev. A Macfarlane MA, having fitted up a genteel house at LONGTOWN for the reception of boarders, proposes to commence teaching immediately after the expiration of the next Easter-Holy-days; when he can accommodate from 15-20 boys at a moderate rate.

The Terms of Board and Education may be known by applying to the Editor of this paper, or to Mr Macfarlane himself, either in person or by letter, post-paid. Having been, for a considerable time in the habit of conducting the Education of Youth, Mr Macfarlane hopes to be able to give ample satisfaction to all who may put their children under his care - the strictest attention shall be paid the their health and morals as well as their mental improvement. ...

The most respectable References may be had, both in England and Scotland, as to Mr Macfarlane’s character and literary talents.

Mr Robert Dickson from the Royal Navy, intends practising as surgeon and midwife at Longtown on Whitsuntide first, and hopes from his knowledge of his profession and attention to his patients, to merit a share of Public Favour.

Grahams’ Arms Inn

Begs to return thanks to the Nobility, Gentry and the Public, for the very liberal encouragement he has already experienced at the above Inn, and assures them of his most assiduous exertions to merit a continuance of their patronage, by a strict attention to everything connected to their comfort and convenience.

JT has peculiar satisfaction in stating that a number of eligible improvements have been made in the house.

Post Horses and Chaises served with dispatch.

G Johnstone, surgeon, of the Hon. Company’s service in India, and who, from ill health, has been induced to leave that country, has the honour to acquaint the Inhabitants of LONGTOWN and vicinity that he intends to settle there immediately and commence the Practice of MEDICINE and SURGERY, in their various branches.

The most respectable reference can be had, not only of his Medical Education, but also of his Services while abroad in India, and consequently hopes to merit a share of the Public Favour.

FOR QUEBEC

The very superior and fast sailing brig ARGUS of Workington, William Wilkinson master, burden 300 tons, and will sail from ANNAN the first week in June.

The greatest attention will be paid to render her accommodations for passengers as comfortable as possible.

For freight or passengers, apply to Mr Andrew Little, Workington, Mr Little, surgeon, Langholm, Mr John Gentle, Hawick, Mr James Burgess, Annan, Mr Robert Little, Longtown or to Mr Cockburn, Carlisle.

Thomas Tweddle and Co. Longtown, have upwards of 200 Carlisle Bushels of Pure Morgan and Highland early potatoes for Sale, selected from one of the best Farmers in Dumfriesshire only one year ago which they warrant good and recommend to any gentleman who wishes to change his seed.

Notice to the Public

Simon Lang of Springfield

Successor to his late father, David Lang (who performed the ceremony of marriage for 42 years prior to his death).

May be found at any time at Springfield by applying to Mr John Sowerby, sign of the King’s Head, or to Mr Wm Johnston, sign of King William IV.

Simon Lang is the only person who is in possession of the Register of Marriages that have taken place at Gretna for the past 46 years. Any person wanting Mr Lang need not call at Gretna.

Board and Education

At Esk Bank Academy, Longtown

Mr Johnston Member of the Universities of St Andrew and Edinburgh and for many years Classical and Mathematical Teacher at Carlisle Respectfully informs his Friends and the Public that he has taken the above Seminary which he will open for the reception of Young Gentlemen Boarders on 8th July.

The Following Branches of Education will be taught by the Advertiser and a well qualified Assistant: English, Latin, Greek, French, Geography, History, Arithmetic, Geometry, Algebra etc.

Information of various subjects will be imparted, calculated to awaken the attention, excite the curiosity and develop and strengthen the faculties of the young mind.

Returns his sincere thanks to the inhabitants of Carlisle and its vicinity for their very kind continuance to him of that patronage whch they so long and liberally conferred on his late father, and begs to assure them that no exertion shall be spared on his part (with the aid of able and experienced workmen) to deserve a continuance of their support.

JB begs to call the Public Attention to his present stock of Vertical and Detatched Lever Watches (in Gold and Silver Cases) of superior London manufacture, and offered at very low prices.

JB has during the Past Year supplied several of his friends with Duplex watches, constructed and finished with the greatest accuracy and encouraged by the high degree of satisfaction produced by their excellent going, will always keep on hand a selection of watches constructed on that most desirable of Principles to those who value accurate performance.

Mathematical Instruments, Music Boxes etc carefully repaired.

JB is happy in being enabled to state that, from the possession of a very excellent Transit instrument (formerly the property of Mr Pitt of this city) he has an advantage in ascertaining and preserving the correct time, which is enjoyed by very few of his profession in the Kingdom.

The property of John Baty, Smithfield, Kirklinton, will serve MARES this season, 1837, at the following charges:

Thoroughbred Mares £5 and 5s the groom

All other Mares £1 1s and 2s 6d the groom.

ROYALIST, in addition to taking the same route as last year, will also visit Hexham.

Mr W Brown respectfully announces to the Inhabitants of Longtown and its vicinity that he is instructed to SELL, by AUCTION, without reserve, on Thursday 10th May instant at one o'clock, on the premises, the genuine and excellent Household Furniture, China, Glass and Desert Service of Handsome Earthenware, and other effects, the property of Miss A Atkinson who is about to remove from her residence at Longtown.
