Built for the Great Northern Railway, unlike its more elaborate neighbour [St Pancras], King's Cross has a design which is more about function and balance.
The arches of the trainshed are clearly visible from the front of the station arranged symetrically around the 120ft high Italianate clock tower. Behind the frontal facia the two arches are 70ft high continue for 800ft.
The station, designed by Lewis Cubitt, and built in 1851-2, was built on the site of a former smallpox and fever hospital and has previously included a six storey granary, large coal stores and stabling for 300 horses. The neighbouring Great Northern Hotel, is a splendid curved building also by Cubitt in the same style was built some 3 years later, and I believe is tragically due to be demolished shortly in conjunction with CTRL/LU work in the area.
